MOTOR SPIRIT,

Petrol is re-distilled from Naphtha--the Grat product obtained from the distillation of crude petroleum. The recent advance in price has been greeted with consternation by Motoriste in general, and declamations against Trusts and Monopolies are being freely indulged in.. The keen competition, which prevails in that industry is in itself a sufficient refutation of

these calumnies, and such calumniators would bo woll advised to acquaint themselves with a few of the compulsory regulations entailed in the distribution of that spirit A complete re--{ volution would result in their various concep tions, and they would also be forgibly impressed with the fact that an enormous capital in absolutely essential for the conduct of the traffic. The petrol is transported from the ́emanating countries in ships which are special ly constructed for that purpose Immediately the vessels enter the River whee the Thames Conservancy have the jurisdic ion they come under control of that body, an bservance of the multifarious restrictions in dsed by them forms a considerable item in the distributing cost, which must ultimately e paid by the consumer. Excepting when the cargo is discharged overside intà the works of the Thanics, Haven Wharves Com mny, no dis. charging place for overside livery has been provided, so valuabl; ships a compelled to mour as low down a S onthent. The spirb has then to be pumped into licensed barges. The operai un is attendant with considerable risk, the danger to navigation 'is considerably aug. mented by the practically pen sea, and the sinking of a barge or a tug is of an infrequent

CONTENTIONS.

The Companies interested contend that as they have efficient and adequate stowage accom< modation a few miles above Thames Haven, liceared by the local authority, the restrictions are antiquated and courcessary. They main tan that by extinguishing the fires prior to entering River, the ships could be treated as barges, and permison granted to tow them as such direct to their le ti sinn, By this means, the expenditure would he considerably reduced, and, as the inference of the spirt
