THE WRESTLING MATCH AT OLYMPIA.
There is nothing new in the modern craze for athletics and its various manifestations, The great wrestling match which is to take place between George Hackenschmidt and Ahmed Madrali at Olympia next Saturday is merely a twentieh-century expression of the gladiatorial combats of ancient Rome.
The history of this wrestling match makes nteresting reading. The seeker after motives may, indeed, find in it a romance of ambition, disappointment, and revenge,
It is litle more than two years since Blackenschmidt beat Madṛali at Olympik in a match which lasted only 44 seconds, the Turk having the misfortune to break his arm. Three years before that Hackenschmidt came to England an unknown man. In less than three months he became famous. His great physicak gifts and prowess on the wrestling mat made him supreme in his profession.
Those who had held sway previous to his arrival did not relish the change of affairs,
ENTER "THE TERRIBLE CREEK/ Envious rivals eagerly sought to encompass his downfall. A well known wre ter named Antoni Pierri--with the "nom de théâtre" of "The Terrible Greek," a man with no ordinary personal skill, an unrivalled gift for exploiting' the ability of other wrestlers-threw down the. gauntlet to the usurper. On 8 November, 1903, in a crowded London muric hall the ill-assorted pair faced each other. Pierri, nearly 20 years the senior man, albeit one of the craftiest. wrestlers alive, was beaten.

a man of gigantic stature and the Sultan's favorite wrestler. He endeavoured to persuade Madrali to return with him, but in vain, for a Mahometan feast then it progress rendered it impossible for a true believer to leave the dominions of Abdul.
Much disappointed, the Greek came back again to London and its November fogs. He forced Hackenschmide to give him yet another match, and, as before, was vanquished by the younger man's superior strength.
Nothing daunted, the astute Paioni once In re packed up his carpet bag, left for the Bosphorus, and this time his quest proved
successful.
Madralijourneyed with the Greek to London. A wrestler by heritage and by religion, as much as by predilection, he made a dramatic debut
