TSAR'S MEssenger IN PRISON.

STARTLING SEQUEL TO A CONVICTION.

DIPLOMATIC CIRCLES HAVE A STRANGE FLUTTER,

The extraordinary story of a missing special courier of the Tsar, of his strange adventures in London, and of his tragic reappearance in prison, came to light the other day, and with it the solution of a mystery which has been pording and worrying certain diplomatic circles in London for some days past.

It is one of the 'strangest stories that the corps diplomatique has been concerned, with

for many a long day, and when the facts filtered through it caused a big sensation.

Also widely circulated in Japan, (Cochin

ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT.

Its contents were of such a secret and con fidential nature that the authorities in St. Petersburg did not care to entrust it to an ordinary, conier. Accordingly, it was given into the hands of a tried and Lusted official of the Russian Foreign Office, M. D'Albrandt, with the strict instructions that he was never to let it out of his sight.

ALL WENT well at FIRST,

At first all went well. M. D'Albrandi, who is a tall, slim, but muscular young fellow of 30, with a fair Vandyke beard, arrived safely in London on Sunday night, having crossed from l'aris, and at once took rooms at the Grosvenor Hotel

On Monday, he delivered the precious dis paich safe and sound at the Russian Embassy in Chesham-place, and was instructed that he had to take a reply back on Thursday morning. At the same time he received an invitation from some of his colleagues at the Embassy to dine with them on Wednesday night. Beyond that, however, he was free to amuse himself as he liked till Thursday.

Wednesday night came, but no M. D'Albrandt turned up to dine at the Embassy, nor did his colleagues receive any message, from him. bencing diplomatists, they probably did not any much about it, whatever they may have thought. But the next morning, when no M, D'Albrandi arrived to take back the message to St. Peters- burg, his friends began to grow uneasy.

The Hongkong Telegraph is the medium for advertising in China. It circulates targely among all classes of the community, is the largest daily newspaper and has a

wider circulation than any journal in the Far

East.

Inquiries were at once set on foot, and the machinery of Scotland-yard was put in motion, and a description of him was sent round to the various police stations. At the Grosvenor Hotel his luggage was still in his room, but M. L'Albrandi had not returned there,

DOMESTIC OCCURRENCES.

The defendant, who was apparently a gentle. man, had given the name of Charles Grant," with an address in Old Bond-st. This was afterwards found to be false.

"Grant was duly defended by a solicitor, but the evidence of an L.C.C. park-keeper and of other persons was so conclusive, that though he denied the offence, he was sentenced as above.

Further inquiries show that the identity of "Grant" with the missing official was suspect ed by the Battersea police from the first. The officer in charge at Battersea-bridge-rd police- station even went so far as to question "Grant" about it when he was under arrest, but the latter replied that he was a Frenchman recent i arrived in England, and beyond that would say nothing.

The fact that he gave an English name, coupled with the false address, and the fact that he was unable to speak English, made the police suspect that he was concealing his real identity,

Grant" was taken into custody by an L.C.C. park constable, who stated in evidence that while on the way to the station the prisoner uffered him money to release him.

MOST RETICENT,

At the court "Gran!" was most reticent, even to his legal adviser. He only spoke a few words in English, but was fluent in French, and all conversation with him had to be carried on through an interpretat.

The story he told his solicitor was that he was a boot manufacturer in Havre, and that he came to England on Tuseday on business. Ho stoutly denied the charge agaiast him, urging that he was mistaken for someone else. When he was told that the house of the address ba had given in Old Bond-st, was unoccupied, said that he had probably mistaken the number of the house where he was lodging, as he had seen it only once.

A TREMENDOUS HULLABALLOO. When the truth came out there was a tremendous hullaballos in diplomatic circles, The Foreign Office,. the Home Office, and Scotland-yard were all dragged in, and the question of Grant's future was vigorously de- bated, as also was the best way for closing an embarrassing incident.

Officially, everyone was silent, and saying "auftic to nobody." At the Home Office an official said that if they had any communication 10 make on the subject it would be sent round. At the Foreign Office another official said that he was unable to say anything about it, and at the Russian Embassy where the "Morning Leader" representative also called, the officials were bot at home to callers.

LUGGAGE STILL AT THE HOTEL, At the Grosvenor Hotel, when the "Leader representative called last evening, "Gract's" luggage was still there. The manager sinted that a gentleman of the name of D'Albrandt bad been staying there, but he know nothing

his bein as to being missing." Certainly, he had not been approached in any way either by the police or the Russian Embassy officials. He did not recollect Mr. D'Albrandt personally, but, then, it being Easter week, the hotel had been very full.

Lastly, Grant." Will he bave to serve his comes the question of what will be done sentence out, or will the theory of extra-ter ritoriality be invoked, by which it may be argued that as the persons of diplomatists are free from artest, this Russian official may be released?

It has been binted that, in these circum- stances, the prisoner might have been quietly removed from Wandsworth Gaol last night and hurried offto the Continent; but "The Morning | Leader® representative was authoritatively in- formed late last night that the prisoner was still in Wandsworth Gaol, and would certainly remain there the night,
