NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.

STEAMSHIP "TREMONT," FROM TACOMA, VICTORIA, YOKO- HAMA, KOBE, MOJI, SHANGHAI AND MANILA.

A BENEDICTINE MONASTERY.

Between two and three miles from Ventnor is an old mansion, built in stately Corinthian style, and known as Appoldurcombe, "iboval- loy of apple trees." It is finely situated, in the midst of a lovely park, and has for background the gentle-rising downs, whose highest point, crowned by a granite obelisk, is nearly 700 feet above the son. The place, formerly the seat of an old island family, is now occupied by a con- gregation of Benedictine monks, who wors driven from their home at Solemes, in France, some four years ago. Strange turn of Fortune's wheel, for the manor of Appaldurcombe'origin- ally belonged to the Benedictines, who, before the Reformation, held much property in the Isle of Wight..

The inhabitants of Wroxall, the nearest vil- lage, were at first suspicious of these strange men who came so unexpectedly from foreign parts, but they have become quite reconciled

to them, and relate instances of the monks' kindness 10 the poor; even adding, with an air of giving the devil his due, that prayers were offered up at the monastery for the recovery of the vicar when he was ill some time ago.

"Their don't seem to be no 'arm in 'em" Baid a villager to me. "You often sees 'em in the grounds, and sometimes in the village, especially of a Thursday. Thursday stems to be their day out, so you med say,"

A small boy standing near was listening with all his ears." It's the brown ones wat do all the work," he remarked; "the black oner don' da nothink, the black unes don't.

Approaching the monastery, writes "1s- lander" in the P. M. G., & caught sight of the "brown ones"-in other words, the lay brothers --busy at work in the grounds, and very picturesque they looked in their brown habits and cowls. One of them directed me to the

The abbot was seated in a great carved chair like a throne, facing the altar al the opposite cad of the chapel, and at right angles to him, extending nearly the whole length of thic building, were four raws of uncomfortable miserere" stalls, two rows on each side, where the brethren gravely seated them [2 selves as the black-robed procession entered. The Benedictines at Appuldurcombe still call themselves "of Solesmes," in memory of [569 their old home in France. Driven hence, they have brought to this island refuge their work, their immense collection of valuable manu scripts, as well as their most cherished possession, a sacred Thorn, which was presented, to their Order by a pilgrim from the Holy Land, at the time of the First Crusade. This Thorn is exposed for veneration every Easter Monday, and the monks claim that its authenticity has been attested by miraculous cures. That clalmn may be open to doubt, but there is no doubting the beauty with which the old Gregorian chants are rendered in this island monastery, As we listen to them, we understand the praise bestowed on Plainsong by Moxirt and Wagner; we get an idea what Pater meant when he said that Gregorian melodies were the fit exemplar for the city of the perfect.

CO.

During the last few years there has been a strong tendency towards the reintroduction of Gregarians or Plainsong both in Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, and the fame of the chanting at Appuldurcombe has spread abroad amongst those interested ecclesiastical music. The interest thus awakened has re- sulted in the formation 01 ឍ summer school, where Protestants, as well as religionists, are received in order to study the methods of Solesmes. Many students, includ- ing several Americans, took advantage of this opportunity last summer, and I am told that an American, a Mr. Douglas, of New York, is considered by the monks to be the greatest authority on Plainsong outside the monastery, To the present Prior, Dom Morquereau, and to his predecessor, Dom Pothier, belong the credit of the practical work of the school of Solesmes. Examples of the type originated by then are now scattered through many choirs [57 and religious houses. In the isle of Wight the uld Gregorians are more exquisitely rendered Ihan anywhere else in the world, not only by the community at Appuldurcombe, but by the sister congregation of Ste. Cécile, who, also having been exiled from France, have ought refuge in the island. The nuns are at present at Northwood House, Cowes, but are soon to remove to Ryde, where they have bought the
