DOWIES RETURN. ··

Chicago, April 10, There arrive: from the south to-day a feeble, querulous old man broken in health and strength. He was met by a handful of friends, jeered, insulted and almost mobbed at the railway station, and when he finally reached his hotel he bank exhausted upou a couch and shivered as with cold.

It was John Alexander Dowie, not the storm- ing, blustering, powerful Dowic of old, who travelled in pomp and splendour, not "Elijah the Restorer," "Mutes the Second," or First Apostle," but as bruken old man, who, believing he has been thrown out of the city he built, has put his affairs in the hands of lawyers, while he tries to husband his fast falling strength for a ánal struggle,

Just before Dowie reached his carriage at the station an incident arose which caused con- siderable excitement among the people, who were eagerly endeavouring to catch a glimpse of the founder of the Christian Catholic church, A man sprang past his ladyguard and waved a legal document in Dowie's fans, but be fore a further move could be male the Zion Per Stberba, for San Francisco, &c.—Mr, and guards bad lifted the intruder from the station Mrs. Herrick, Misses. Duwie very little.

After a shunt test Dow ir sumanioned his legal advisers, and then ensued a conference which lasted the greater part of the evening. Just what the proceedings will be to reinstate the "first apostle" in Zon Cny were not definitely stated, but Dowie did state must emphatically that there would be no compromise with Voliva, and that Lt. John Alexander Towie must be the lender of Zion or nothing at all

Tonight, alter a long consultation with his legal adviser, Emil G. Wetton, Dowie gave out the statement that it might be several days be fore he saw fit to enter the city which he had founded.

Volivá said today: "If Dawie wishes to come quietly to Zion. City and go to Shiloh House he will be permitted to do so, and immediately on his arrival be well be pres sented with a carefully prepared statement of the charges, against him, and, should he ex- press a willingness to answer the charges, he will be allowed in do so in presence of the averseers."

Overseer Valiva's statement concluded with the reiteration of Zion's intention to negotiate $10,000,000 loan on a blanket mortgage, to pay off outstanding claims.and give the industries - which are to be incorporated a new impetus.

The plans for to-morrow new contemplate a careful entry, when Dowie is tested and when supported by many of his followers, he will choose the psychological monient to burst upan his people. Many of them are confident he will have a formidable bodyguard when he moves on Zion. There are open threats Zion to

to shoot bum on sight. V

Overseer Vulva issued a statement 10-day, admitting Bowie's charge that that Vohra, the brother of the over-ear, served a term in the the Michigan City Penitentiary for lurgery.

LENTEN FAST OF FORTY DAYS:

Let us look and see when this Lenten veason, as we call it, began: Very early in the history of the church they began to hold a fast, same time before. Easter. But it was not a forty days' fast. I took the church 100 years to come to any such agreement, 12 was the inuith contury before the present custom was acs epted And why forty days? We must go back and look at history. Noah waited just forty days before he opened the ark. The sain which caused the food lasted rusty days and forty nights, according to the story, Moses, was forty days on Mount Sipni, the spies that went out to see if Carano crull he conquered took forty days Enjal tasted forty days in the wilderness, Jesus is reported to have fasted forty days at the time of iris temp atinn.

"Forty days has peculiar signification as related to old English law. A widow after the death of her husband, was permitted to remain in the house, befine any legal steps could be taken, for forty day. The length of legal quarantine in case of disease was forty days. Members of Parliament were exempi from the danger of arrest,, no matter what they had done, for forty days before Parliament met and forty days after it adjourned, If a stranger appeared in an English parish be was allowed forty days of freedom before he was compelled to give as a count of himsel,to decido ne to his legal residence. The ersións had a fast that lasted forty days. When the Spanish discovered Old Mexion, in this country, along with the creas and many other religious symbals which they were surprised to And, they discovered there the custom of a forty days fast. The Orinorn Indians were accustomed to keep a lo ty days' fast. Fasting came to be recognized as a religious rite among Jews and Chris inns and almost all re- ligions in the world.", H. Smith in Public Opinion.
