THE OBSERVATION OF

EARTHQUAKES.

Few calamities are more'dreaded than earth- „quakes. Apart from the swiftney of the des.. truction, the awful unexpectedness of the calamity affords not the slightest opportunity for preparation to meet and mitigate it, as may be done with lamines or pestilence. In recent years, however, the study of seismic disturb ance has made considerable headway, and, although the practical outcome has so far been comparatively small, few brauches of scientific investigation have received closer attention, [360 and noné deserves more. Highly sensitive. instruments have made it possible to register at any point of the surface of the earth all strong shocks of the earth's crust. The per-. fection which these instruments" have lately reached places us in a position to trace, round the earth sufficiently strong intensity, the elastic waves proceeding from an earthquake. Thus the San Francisco earthquake was accurately recorded and timed at Sicawei, and it is also on record that the Vicentini microseismograph `at the Manila Observatory began to register a microseismic disturbance, caused by a far distant earthquake, presumably that in San Francisco. And probably we shall learn later no that instruments in yet moto distant parts of the world were similarly affected

NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.

Although up to the present, the number of stations equipped with the necessary instru inckis is very limited, nevertheless the registrations already secured have thrown important light on the nature of earthquakes. But the principal value of these investigations consists in the fact that a better conception has been obtained of the interior of the earth, which

entirely withdrawn from direct observation, that was for a long time possible, and this,. competent authorities assert, is a matter of

As instru paramount importance, inasmuch inental observation alone not yet sufficient to solve the most important problems in cont nection with earthquake phenomena.

Earthquakes in China are happily not of sucly frequent occurrence or violence as they are in some other parts of the world, yet they happen often enough to make it worth the while of those interested in the subject to Jura their attention to this country.

The International Seismological Association, which was founded, in the year 1903 at the Second International Scismological Conference at" Strasburg, atid to which almost all civilised nations belong, we are informed are now tak- fering steps to collect information about any seismological phenomena that may occur in China in the future. The object in view to this end is to establish; not only in China but. all parts, of the earth, a systematically arranged set of earthquake stations, and to stablish observations according to coinmon principles. The services of all are enlisted and in such a cause will be willingly granted. The Association has in contemplation to publish a seismic atlas on the basis of the

material stored up in the existing catalogues of earthquakes. This atlas is to give a car iographical representation of the extension of earthquakes and particularly of the position of the epicentres. The inadequacy and locom pleteness, of the reports of earthquakes in former years, owing to the lack of systematic and concerted investigation, have rendered it impossible to come to any satisfactory and de- finite conclusion on many important points connected with the study of the subject, but be German Society may well be instrumental in bringing about a better knowledge in this ection, and we shall follow with interest he ever-increasing volume of facts and figures which will result from the efforts being made to throw light on seismological problems.

We may mention that recording cards, giving in question form the particulars desired for earthquakes, and also for seaquakes, may be obtained at the German Consulate General, Shanghai, by all desirous of helping in this [560 matter. These cards, on the occurrence of an earthquake, are to be filled in and forwarded to the Seismic Observatory at Strasburg, Ger- many.-X. C, D, Nova,

SOME FACTS ABOUT AN ANCIENT INDUSTRY.

"The Making of Glass" is one of the most ancient crafts, for it was practised by the, Egyptians more than 3,500 years ago. bulk of our best English glassware is pinduced in the Birmingham and Stourbrigde districts, , and the commoner qualities of pressed glass

are manufactured in the North of England.,

English glassmakers work on a peculiar sys tem of their owo. The glassworkers work in shifts of six hours' dura'ion, two teams of men being employed night and day, one set relieving the other every six hours alternately, from Monday morning until Friday evening, when the pots are refilled with the ingredients for making the metal for the next week's work..

The workmen are divided into what are technically called chairs, or sets, each of which makes one particular class of work ; thus, one chair might be engaged on wineglasses, on- olher on fancy glass, and so on.

The number of bands engaged at each chair usually consists of four, viz, the principal workman, the servitor, the footmaker, and a boy. The system by which glassmakers are paid is as peculiar as their method of working, the men being paid so much per move, accord- ing to

the class of work they produce, and the position they оссиру

in the chair, What is technically called a move's work in the glass trade is a nomical period of three [Q hours' work that is, halt a toro, there being two moves in a turn-during which time each set of men are supposed to make what is con- sidered a fair number of articles, although in many of the regular-running patterns certain numbers which constitute a move's works ara koown by the men throughout each district,
