RAILWAY ENTERPRISE IN ·
FUBKIEN.
Whether any of the present generation are likely to I've long enough to see an efficient railway system in this I rovince, is a question likely to be answered by ipost observers in the negative. Nevertheless, schemes of the most extensive kind are in contemplation; and, however they may jurn out, an outline of them will perhaps not be without interest.
The main centre of the proposed railway 'system appears to be not Foochow, but Amoy
At all events it is there that operations are (at unspecified date) to begin. The lina, is to pr ceed westward in Chang Chou and thence, through the most important towns in the Chang Chow prefecture, to Chau Chun

On varinus occasions in former times, when the construction of railways has been project- ed, speculators (mostly-foreign of the shabbier description) have taken the opportunity to buy up land, where the intended railway was to be Inid. This was notably the case at Hankow, when the question of railway costruction came to the fore in that poti. In the present case, however, the Government have taken precaution of informing all the foreign Consuls of the general direction of the proposed line, and naiifying them that a right of pre-emption is held over the land on which it is to be buili. The precise track of the Ines has not yet been fixed, and the rough indication of it! which has been supplied to the Cousuis is very vague the only places definitely named be ing those specified above-but any one who feels inclined to speculate on the advent, of the railway would do well to make a note of the fact that he will probably have consider difficulty to encounter.
Ic
Two French engineers have been engi ;/1 to survey the route, and when as leas been done we may hear more definitely where the railway is to be; but whether, cảnsidering the low financial state of the province, it will" ma. terinise to the extent its projectos, conten- plate, we venture to retain à doubt,- Fouchew Echo.
CLOCK-MAKING IN NAĜOYA.
The clock-making industry in Nagoya, for 'which that city has oblined a great reputation in Japan, is at prescut ip, a very prosperous condition, manufacturers having more orders on hand than can be executed promptly.
The total number of clucks turned out in Nagoya during March last was 32, „84, of which 21,594 were hanging checks, and the rest stand ing clocks. The quality of the time-pieres made in Nagoya is gradually improving in ofcenient of the in- consequence of the spection rules, and at pretent the number of clocks rejected by inspection is not more than per thousand. By the increase in demand and the advance of the cupper marjes, the price of time-pieces has advanced to an average of Y20 per dazen-Japan Che si le.

The time is not te off when France will awaken to the terrible evil being, wrought amongst her people by the deadly green paiton, and will likewise prohibit its sale Several at tempts have been already made by certain of her legislators, but so great is the vice through out the country that the Cabinet hesitate to pass stringent laws for fear of a revolution.
Absinthe composed of the fiwers and leaves of various kinds of wormwood, Angelica root, sweet-Bag rot, Staranse fruit, and other aromatics. These are all pounded together, steeped for eight days in alcohol, and then dis
illed. The result is a green-coloured liquid, to which is added a certain quantity of oil of anise. This is pure absinthe, but little of this is sold nowadays. The adulterations practised in its manufacture are innumerable.

Every visitor to Paris, of course, samples ab- sinthe. You take your glass of liquor, place a piece of leaf sugar upon a perforated spoon, and melt the sugar by pouring water, drop by drop, upon it. But even with this addition its taste is not nice-something like a draught of of paregoric and it leaves a twang in the mouth which lasts for hours,
Only the most dissipated of drinkers take it without water:
Very soon a curious feeling of exaltation comes over the person unaccustomed to the poison. For a tims he treads with fairy feet; he feels like a Sandow, with a brilliancy of thought not usually his own. This is the feeling for which Frenchman, drink.
But, of courie, this condition is not produced in the hardened drinker by merely a glass or two. Some need as many as twe ty or thirty glasses before the charm works,
