AERONAUT'S STRUGGLE IN SWAMP,

New York, April 5." The discovery of a deserted balloon on the Landbar of Long Island has been followed by the confirmation of the conjectures of his riends that M. Paul Nocquet, the Belgian sculptor and aeronaut, had perished.

In order to test the thenry that it is safe to allow a breeze to blow a balloon out to sea during the day, because the wind invariably blows towards the shore after sundown, M. acquet had ascended from the northern quar. ter of New York on Tuesday afternoon. He and the balloon going at 40 miles an hour to was lay seen alive at dusk, 3co feet in the air, wards Oyster Bay. Ife shouted to some schoolboys in the Garden Cith, "I have lost my grappling hook and cannot land."

HORRORS OF THE STRUGGLE. About nine o'clock some Fire Island ob servers found, by the moonlight, the empty basket and deflated balloon on the narrow beach. Footprints were traced for half a mile, and search was made all day Wednesday.

From the spot where the balloon descended the lights of the village of Amityville could be seen. If the aeronaut strove to reach it, the horrors of such a desperato struggle can only by Luessed, The distance la three miles-all shoals and he must have waded, floundered, and crawled often up to his breast in the Quagmire,

There were signs that he had reached Baya Creek, 40 feet wide, for here his topcost was picked up. It looked as if he had swam across, and had gained Cort's Island a marshy swamp,

The local boatmen say he could not have reached ala Any before four o'clock on Wednesday morning. Here, last night, his body was found, a mass of slime. A cork life-preserver had kept him afloat. The last drop in the small brandy flask had been swallowed. M. Nocquet's face was upturned, his hands crossed in front, the dying man having evidently resigned himself to

late.

Other stories suggest that he threw himself from an ocean grava. A will was found on the body, made on the day of the ascension.

M. Nocquet won fame as the sculptor of the yawning wuman, the talk of the Paris Salon four years ago. He shocked America by caricaturing In clay Mr. Roosevelt on vacation, representing the President dragging a grisly bear from the cave by his ear and holding a [sas cub in his triumphant hand,
