Jiura, au engineer of the Department THE Undersigned has received instructions of Communications, who is attached to the submarine cable-tender: Okinawamaru, bas made the following report to headquarters: On the 14th April, when the steamer was about ten miles to the north-east of Bayonnaise Rock, which lies south-east of Aogashima, a small | island off Iru Province, dense volumes of white smoke were sean rising from the son close to the rock It was then about 11 am.

On the

3rd or 4th instant, when in the vicinity, nothing unusual was noticed, so it is concluded that he smoke began to rise only a few days before the 14th. The volume of smoke much in creased in the afternoon, and a rough survey made by the ship's officers showed that it was rising to a height of over 1,000 feet, and was still visible on the 15th when the steamer left, Pumice stone was seen floating upon the sea about 20 miles from the rock,

OSAKA SHOSEN KAISHA.

A SEASON OF BAD BUSINESS.

In common with the genera) dulness of the maritimo trade, the business of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha for some time past has not been very satisfactory, and it is feared, says the Osaka Asaht, that the prospects for the second-half of j this year are worse than were those for the first half. The total receipts and expenditure of the Oak Shosen. Kaisha for the three months anded March 31st, as compared with the cor. responding period of last year, are as follows:

Though there was a small falling off in the foreign trade of Bangkok last year, there was an increase in the amount of the shipping of the port; 739 steamers of a tonnage of 670,109 were cleared inwards as compared with 723, of 649,420 tons in 1904, and 613 of 514,647 tons in 1903.
