HOW TO REČOME A HONGKONG
CIVIL SERVANT,
One of the bulwarks of this great and glorious Empire is that famous institution known officially as the Hongkong Civil Ser that Service is so highly appreciated by se vice. The privilege of being attached to
heads of Departments that they never cease singing the Jubilate Deo, unless they join in Justy chorus in one grand Te Deum. The minor branches of this wonderful Service is manned by a hardworking staff, which seeks to eke out its livelihood, when in its pristine youth, by contemplating from afar the radi ant brilliancy of the stars in the firmament of the blest. They may even indulge in visions, for which no charge will be made,
the superiors on high being very far removed from those wily innkeepers of the west who charge for the view of the scenery as well as for hopes never realised. But these same members of the Junior Service, so to speak, tious of the Service by advancing some mar must not attempt to get beyond the regula vellous excuse that they cannot live on the extravagant salaries they receive, or suggest that they 'desire a rise in salary--and, re- member, they get salaries, not wages like the
common ruck. No wonder then that there are people who are not casuists but place profound faith in the Hongkong Civil Service; they will argue that it gives the civil servant a status in life; they may boast of desk stamped with the hallmark of Govern what he will be when entitled to sit at a
ntent superiority; they may do anything, in fact, so long as they join in the peon of praise and if they do that and behave properly
