A QUESTION OF PURE WATER.
Tarun Einron es tet: "Basuatung Trilusang."
"There are probably few cities which will be kely to feel the effects of the destruction of San Francisco so keenly as Manila. We are more dependent in a business way upon that city than upon any other, and the terrible dumption there of the usual agencies of com- merce is bound to tell heavily here. The same is true to some extent financially. Some of our merchants, fortunately most of them on a small scale, have been supported by Frisco ouses, and if the latter prove unable to weather the storm the reflex action is likely to be felt by local firms. There is very little possibility of the worst being realized, however. As in the case of other great catastrophes which have afflicted cities of the United States, the whole country has spontaneously and with unbounded liber

Now all 1 desire to know is, What is the matter with the water? I thought it was filtered before it came into the public mains, but if that is the case, then the filters must be in a pretty bad state for they do not seem to be fulfilling their pur pose. Perhaps it is that the recent rains which helped to fill the reservoirs and give us an adequate supply of water have also brought with them all the loase earth and rubble on the hillsides, with the result that the water, is far from pure. It is all very well to have a full supply of water, but if that supply is conta- minated and bad for health, I would rather have a restricted supply of the pure thing. The question that concerns me, and, so doubt, others is' this--Can we trust the water, even without the qse of a filter? Trusting that I have not taken up too much space,-Igm, yours etc... T.
