How did it happen? Thos. A kind angle of mine, George Bishop, had a house and grounds. Antony, Messrs. Armstring, J. Arnold, Mr.

on the river side, at Twickenham, just opposite the Duke of Buccleuch's at Richmond. In these grounds George. Rishóp had boilt an observa. tory for the well-know astronomer, Mr. Hind. This was open to the Astronomer oyal night and day; he could come, and make any obser vations he liked, matter what their strength might be, us, unless my uncle happened to be present (and he didn't mind), it was not likely that there would ever be anyone to hear the astronomer's wise sayings, unless he happened to be accompanied by his clerk, an astiono. mer minor in the same line of celestial business as himself. Certuinly in the courses", the "You can have this room to yourself," said my uncle to me, the next one Du Chailiu will occupy "the entinent African explorer was a visitor there for some weeks-"ooly," my un- cle went on to say, "you'll both have in clear out whenever ind wants ie be, there for his work."

But the good astronomer was very consi derate. Whenever he did arrive in was late at night, and he and his clerk warhed til nearly dawn. Then by 11e time that dather Du Chail

Occasionally Du Chailla would took in on me for a chat, or I would ask him if he were inclined for a ride, ton on the river, or a walk. Sometimes, as it subsequently appeared, he had only "dropped in" for the purpose of read- ing to me extracts from his forthcoming book, when he would dramtally illustrate the scenes, with the aid of tables and chairs for rocky ground, and a walking-stick for a riße.

COMPANIONE OF MY TOIL

The work itself had been commenced at my friend F. C. Wilson's house, Theubalds, Wal- tham, a delightful old place which at one time had formed part of the Hunting Lodge occu
