A MIGHTY HUNTER OF WOLVES.

STORIES OF LUCA CHIARETTI One of the most characteristic figures of the old days and regime has just disappeared in the person of Luca Chiaretti, a famous hunter of wolves. He had a thoroughly studied their habits and cries, that he could imitate them perfectly, and understood the mood which a contain cry indicated. He would give out their cries in such a manner that they came fearless ty to him, and he would then kill or capture them at will. He died at the age of seventy six, and up to the last could kill a vigorous woll with the same skill as fifty years before. His entire brdy was courted with scars of wounds inflicted by the animals which he may he said to have loved the most. They were to him wonderful beings, full of intelligence, their very ferocity being a charm to their extermina

for.

The most visible of Chiarettife wounds was on his left hand and arm. He was one day called by the great Victor Emanuel to kill walf which had been giving a great deal of trouble near Rome. Chiaretti decided to take the beast alive to give to the King, when it seized his left hand in its jaw and bit until the teeth met. Nothing daunted by the excruciating pain, the courageous hunter, much to his regret, was constrained to kill, with a knife which he had in his sight hand. saved by the fact that it was his right not his left hand which was free.

WHY "RANJI" IS CALLED PRINCE.

When Ranjitsinji first came to England, says a writer in Fry's Magazine, he was the heir apparent of the Jam (the ruling Prince) of the State of Jamnagar, which is situated in the peninsula of Kathiaweir, about two hundred miles north of Bombay. The lam had no son then and he adopted Raujitsinhji, who was his zephew. Sngls urloption in a Rajput family, like the Rompin adoption, puts the adopted son in precisely the same position as a son. So in Jaw Ranjithji became the son and heir of the Jam. But a clause in the articles of adop tion provided that Ranjisinji should not succeed to the God--iz., princedam-if subse quently a son was, born to the Jam by any of his Ranees After Ranjissinhji had been in England some years a son was burn to the Jam by one of his wives. But as this fady was Sa Mahousedan she could not under Rajput Iaw he a folf Rance. We should call her a morganatic wife. Ranjitsinhji therefore regard. ed the birth of her son as in no way altering his position. However, on the death of the Jam, this boy, while Ranjitsinji was still away in England, was crowned. Ranjisinhji at once claimed that he, and not the boy, was the ruling prince of the State and requested the Indian Government for an inquiry. Fer some complicated reason, the rights of which are still in dispute, the inquiry was never granted.
