recent disaster at Takashima, and who has just returned to Tokyo, a dispatch plates that the total damage by the recent explosion is os timated at about Y500.00, including the summ of Yroo ooo, which will be paid by the owners of the mine, the Mitsu Bishi firm, to the fami lies of the men killed.

Tug Osaka Shosen Kaisha has been notified by the Department of Communications that a subsidy of V140,000 a year will be granted the company's service to Taiten. The conditions are a bi-weekly service with steamers of over 1,500 tons of a speed of over 13 knots. The service was opened by the Tenure-maru which leit Osaken on the 13th instant and Kobe on the following day, Three other vessels-the Tainm-muru, Katjamaru and Keelung muru, will be put on this line.

"THE poor people live on two, pancakes a piece a day." wails a writer in the Peking and Tientsin Times. And he goes on to prove how poor they are. fe says "The scarcity of silver and coins is greatly felt in the markets of Heilungking, which, affects the price of Articles to a large extent; living is about three or four times dearer than it was, ten years ago. The price for cloth is hicher and so many persons are seen in rags." Last of all, as an evidence of the extreme poverty that prevails, le remarks: If one of their fellow country. men is insulted, they dare not come to his assistance, and those who come out and venture la sympathise with a victim after the Russians have left, are regarded as the most benevolent men."

THE result of the official trial-trips of the twn submarine vessels recently built at the Kawasaki Dockyard, Kobe, for the Imperial Japanese Navy, having proved completely satisfactory, the second fotilla of submarine boats has now been commissioned. Comman der Ide and Lieutenants Miyaji, Oinwarn, and Nakagi, have been appointed to the command of the new submarines, Commander Ide acting ds.the commander of the flotilla. The apparent paradox thai four commanders should be appointed for two vessels is thus explained by the Japan Chronicle: submarine vessels each require two commanders, who take duty alter nately at regular intervals. The first Botilla of submarines consists of the five vessels built at Yokosuka.

L

WRITING under date Tsingtao, 2nd April, the correspondent of the N-C. D. News anys Although at the beginning of the year Tsing. tao ceased to be a free harbour, the change dul not come into operation at once; the first three months of the year being a transition period, during which goods ordered before December could be imported free. This pe riod having now expired, goods of all kinds have to pay-duty, and in this respect the post differs from none of the treaty ports in China. It was a long time before this question was Eculed, as so many different interests had to be, considered carefully. The tenor of the treaty is that the Imperial Maritime Custome collect all duties and pay 20% of all money thus received on imported goods to the Impe- rin German Government which, it seems to us, ha not made a bad business from this Derangement.

"1,Hour you) had nothing to do with the case," said his Honour the Paisne Indge in the Summary Court this morning, in a man who appeared ia Cour on behalf of his wife, in an Bwer to a summan issued by Messrs. Jeejee bhoy and Co., to recover the price of goods sold and delivered."No, my Lord," replied the man, but my wife is unable to com and 1 want to nsk for an adjournment." is Han- our "Why cannot she cnnte? She is sick. my Lord."Then where is the doctor's certifi cate? "I didn't get one." Very well, 11 adjourn the case till next Friday, and in the meantime you must bring me a doctor's certi. ficate before next Friday, otherwise the case will be disposed of summarily,"

rese woman on the Prays, at Kounedy Town, on the 14th instant. Inspector, Collett pro secuted, and the defendant, who was unrepro- rented, denied the charge. The case was re- manded.

THE remarkable increase during the last few years in the number of women employed in various branches of commercial life in Japan must be regarded as a very significant eign of the times. Not göstent with the occupations which have almost exclusively belonged to females, they have now invaded those fields which have hitherto been considered entirely as belonging to the male sex. The experiment made in the employment of women as clerks and book-keepers has been found satisfactory, and we now find girls employed in many of the firms and stores in Tokyo and ather large cities. The employment of women in these various directions will do much towards eman- cinating Japanese women, who have until now been entirely dependent on men for the shaping of their destinies. It is only natural, under such circumstances, that female education should engage serious public attention. The number of girls receiving school education, it stated, is now more than eight times the number of those at school ten years ago. More remarkable are the figures given by the Tokyo the Educational Society. Fifteen years ago percentage of females admitted to the training school for teachers was less than 20, as com. pared with the men, but in-day the rate hast

It is said that women, as teachers, are proving themselves superior to men, and that there is consequently more demand for the former thin the latter.
