men have accumulated their millions wholly in this way: Prompt and faithful in every con. tract or engagement they enjoy the confidence of the public and command a class of trade that is refused to unstable or tricky competitors. In

the Japan Advertiser The Japan Herald sintes that on Wednesday morning, about covered drifting in the creek near Kamo-no seven o'clock, the body of a foreigner was dis hashi. It was reinoved from the water and taken to the police-station, where à medical' oxamination showed that life had been extinct for at least two days. There was a had bruise on the head, but all the evidence pointed to death being caused by drowning. On the body were found some letters addressed to Mr. A. M. Knapp, and the body was subsequently identified as that of Mr. A. T. Knapp.
The decencil, says the Herald, who was for some time connected' with the Japan Adverter, was n man of brilliant talents. As a musician, although he never performed in public, he had great ability, and his theore- tical knowledge of the art could hardly he❘ excelled. The many able criticisms of local concerts that have appeared from his pen in the columas of the Advertiser bore witness to his knowledge. Mr. A. T. Knapp was, we believe, a student of Cambridge University;

It aids digestion, drives im- purities from the blood and cures Anemla, Scrofula, Debility, Influenza, Throat and Lung Troubles, and Wasting Complaints. 'Dr Louis W. Bishop says: "I take pleasure in saying! have found it a most efficient preparation, em- bodying all of the medicinal properties of a pure cod liver oil in a most palatable form." It stands in the front rank in the march of medi- cine. It is a scientific remedy and a feed, with

The Nichi-Nichi, commenting on the ro marks of the Minister of Finance, says that if this statement is nothing more than an expres sinn of his personal hopes it may be passed over unnoticed, but if he really believes that what he says will actually come to pass, the statement must not go unchallenged. It is not improbable that the exportation of mw silk may reach 20,000 bales, but it must be borne in mind that, with the increase of exports, im- parts will also increase. It is contrary to theory and practice that, while one branch of trade pro- THE Undersigned have received instructions gresses, the ther should remain stationary. In the earlier years of Meiji, as Mr. Sakatani saya, nobody even dreamed of the prosperous cordi- tion of the silk trade which now exists, but, with the increase of exports, imports have also been considerably augmented-the latter al most invariably showing a preponderance over the farmer. Even if the export of raw silk develops into the fourishing state as suggested by the Minister of Finance, his expectations as to the paying-off of the debt by this means are not likely to be fulfilled, for the simple reason that the growth of imports will keep pace with the growth of exports,

A NEW VIOLIN PRODIGY.
The ten-year-old violinist, Vivien Chartres, has been greatly honoured in Berlin. It was on the occasion of her debut there after having had many successes in Vienna. According to the Musical Standard, the concert took place at the Lycrum Club, the occasion being the celebration of the Kaiser's birthday. Little Vivien played the solo music of Max Bruch's concerto, accompanied by the composer him- self. As the venerable, white-haired master
