mistaken policy of an evidently exclusive nature. The boycolt of American goods, and riots against foreign missions, regardless of nationality, have justly put even the friendly American on guard. This unfortunate situa- tion of things in China is opening the way for mischief-makers among the Powers to attempt to polson the ignorant but highly conceited Mandario minds against other Powers. No step could be so opportune, for checking the underhand manœuvres of certain Powers, and for creating a sense of confidence in the minds of the Chinese themselves, than the presenta tion of a united front by Japan, England and America, three Powers whose interests in China are in perfect harmony, and whose re- lations with that country are the closest and the greatest la importance. But, being the nearest and closest of China's friends, Japan should lead the way for the admission of Brilish and American enterprise into Man- churin, and engage together with them in the work of realising the "open door" policy in Manchuria. That would be the nearest way to

silence calumniators, and to preserve China from further internal complications.

THE ORIGIN OF FOOTBALL,

KNOWN IN CHINA 2,000 YEARS AGO.

fa the "Nineteenth Century" Mr. H. A. Giles, Professor of Chinese at Cambridge, writes on football and polo in China. He remarks that football was played by the Chioene several centuries beforę Julius Caesar landed in Britain. Its invention has been ascribed to the mythical Yellow Emperor of the third millen. nium B. C. Ha quotes an ancient record-

The Emperor, Chieng T, B.C. 31-6 was fond of football; but his officers represented to him that it was both physically exhausting and also unsuitable to the Imperial dignity, His Majesty replied "We like playing; and what one chooses to do is not exhausting." An appeal was then made to the Empress, who suggested the game of "ziddiywinks" for the Emperor's amusement.

Feveral writers have left us accounts of actual games: "On the Emperor's birthday two teams played football before the Imperial pavilion. A goal was set up, of over thirty feet in height, adorned with gaily coloured silks, and having an opening of over a foot in diameter." The object of each side appears to have been to kick the bail through the opening, the players taking it in turns to kick, and points being scored accordingly. The winners 'were re warded with flowers, fruit, wine, and even silver bowls and brocades. The captain of the losing side was dogged, and suffered other

dignities."

The names of several prent footballers are hinded down to posterity. Ancient Chinese poetry is quoted descriptive of various football games. Toto was also very popular. A maker palo clubs, as duly recorded in the Book of Marvels, was taken up to heaven in brond daylight.

Yet, that such it, indeed, an indisputable fact, the following authentic details will amply attest.

Comparatively few folk have escaped the peril of manufacturing in their own insides that deadly explosive, nitro-glycerine, though at the time they were so doing they may have been utterly innocent of the fact. Glycerine, most folks are aware, is a popular panacea for colds and sore throats, We will suppose that a reader has imbibed a liberal spoonful of this soothing concoction, and that, afterwards, feeling thissty, he bas refreshed himself with a baule of lemonade.
