Hanging from the crescent ropes of glitter- ing gems is a square medallion, the size of a cigarette-case, on which, standing on an em erald mound, is the Turkish dag in rubies, the whole being backed by diamonds. Below is suspended in a diamond frame a miniature of the purchaser, and, completing the whole scheme, at the bottom is a pearl as large as an acorn.

His Majesty had the jewel taken to Bucking ham Palace, and, on picking it up, the King laughingly said he was glad that he was not forced to wear anything so gorgeous or heavy. The value of the jewel is £30,000.

The new line from Kareima along the bank of the Nile to Abu Hamed pair the Dongola province of the Sudan within 580 miles of the Red Sea, by the new railway from Berber to the Port Sudan. It takes the place of the rail. way, closed in 1904, from Kerma 10 Wadi Hala, by which route Dongola was 970 miles from Alexandria, a distance absolutely probibi tive of profitable trade. The new fine thus helps forward Lord romer's settled policy of opening up the Sudan by giving its chief pro- dactive centres casy access to the sea.
