"PLYING SNAKES.”
At the scientific meeting of the Zoological Society sonic notes were read by M., R. Shel. ford, late of the Saraway Museum, on "flying" snakes. These inakes are climbers and
wonderful provision of nature has been made
for them to break their fail in case of accident d. They have when at a height from the grud. a sort of hinge line in the skin, on either side of the body, and by murular contraction the ventral surface of the reptile is draw» in to as to become quite concave and the body more fasta ed. When falling, instead of wriggling other snakes do, they hold their bodies perfectly rigid and glide down slowly to the ground, which they reach at quite an angle from where their fall began.

is half belief that some day his good-luck dream will come true.
Even with overwhelming odds against him in the uncompromising world of facts and fimitations, the average mortal clings to this inner secret hope of good.
No matter how ginomy the present outlook, bo atbrary the confines that put him away from his fram, he cannot quench the range hope that persists within him like a self-renew, ing flame, bidding him believe that eventually his roseate visions will become reality. How or when does not matter. Somehow, tome.
where, so ne time, the good he longs for will
come to him,
The average practical person will tell you that this is not so; will deny that he possesses what is apparently a weakness of intellect, à lack of common sense. Yet if you observe him you will see that his actions belie his words. In the presence of a fortune teller you will see him quite as eager an any to hear the welcome prediction of the "unexpected good luck" that is certain to come his way. Observe his auxiety thereafter concering letters that artive for him,
Have you noticed how most people betray ".
the hope that is in them when the pastman appears? The expectant curiosity, the swift hope of unusual good news, the cager looking forward to something-one knows not what something beautiful and fortunate-which one of us does not know the experience?
Whether one has the faintest reason for such hope or not makes no difference. The expec tation is there, an instinct in human nature that will not down.
Clearly, then, all of us live in the expectation of good. And this is right. Life that amounts to anything must be brimming with expecta-
