THE KOWLOON-CANTON RAILWAY.

Our special wire from Shanghai yesterday reveals the Viceroy' of Canton once again in his mood of obstructiveness which His Ex- cellency has shown himself so prone to fall into off and on. But witen at the beginning of last month, on the occasion of Admiral Train's visit to Canton, His Excellency was accorded an adequate reception at the official yamên, it was believed that the Viceroy had cast off his peevishness DEODORISER and would once again resume the in-

His latest action in relation to the terms of the agreement of 1899 concerning the Kow- toon Canton railway, however, does not look hopeful that he is anxious to advance the construction of the line. It is an old plea that he is urging for delaying the commencé. ment of this most important undertaking

ship yesterday. It appeared that the Indian hawker approached the officer yeterday with his goods for sale. It was alleged the officer took the goods already mentioned to his cabin and which is valued at $45, refused to pay for it and hunted the man off the ship. The Indian went to the Water Police Station and reported the matter. The officer's cabin was afterwards searched by the police, but the goods were not found. The defendast denied the charge, and the evidence heard was of so flimsy a nature that Mr. F. A Huzeland ordered the officer to be discharged.

MR. Kurino, ibe.now Japanese Ambassador to France, with his family, was to leave for his post yesterday, by the Binge-Maru from Yo kobama. n the 16th all., Mr. Kuring gave a farewell dinner at the Misui Club, attended by about 40 gentlemen, including Marquis Saionji and other Ministers of State.

YESTERDAY afternoon, A. Nielsen, AB, P. & 33 Afantia, was summoned at the instance of the captain of the ship for absenting himself from the vessel from the 26th February to 28th alt, without permission. The defendant ad- nitted leaving the ship without leave. Mr. F. A. Hazeland, who beard the case, sentenced the defendant to fourteen days' hard labour.. ACCORDING to the latest news received from Saigon, the Messageries Maritimes Company have finally given op the Gabung as a total wreck. The Courrier Saigonnais says: "The officers who remained in the vicinity of the

vessel are now taking steps to save everything of value. When this is finished, which will probably be in fifteen days, they will return to Saigon."

YESTERDAY afternoon the quiet and tran- quillity of Pokfoulum was disturbed as a result of a tree fight which took place between some coolies employed at the Dairy Farm. It was "chow" time, and when the coolies had gather ed round the table it was discovered that one coolic-a Hak-ka-was missing. One of the men present, who appeared desirous of perpe- traling a practical joke, picked up some manure and daubed it around the rim of the absent man's rice bowl. When the Hak-ka turned up. he picked up the bowl to commence his dinner, when he discovered the "joke" that THE Nugasaki Press.says that the master of had been played on him. Not being able to the British 5.5. Cons; from Vladivostok, re-appreciate the humour of it, he got disorder

ly and soon seven coolies set upon him and gave him a thrashing that necessitated hip instant removal to hospital. His assailants were arrested. They were placed before Mr. C. A. of a serious falling off in the demands for

copper in Chips, ie., copper for minting pur Poses. Already China is exporting copper pre- viously imported. The new currency doubtless has a decided bearing on the consumption and will considerably lessen previous demands. In anticipating future business with the Chiness Empire it would be wise to act with extreme caution, and not rely upon the present high values. Of course other demands may arise, but such do not appear for the present on the commercial horizon of the Chinese Empire. I
