BASKETFUL OF DOLLARS STOLEN,

⚫h inst.

There was some commation in Queen's Road Central at 930 o'clock yesterday morning when a Chinaman was seen with a small basket under his arm, bolting westwards, while a heap of dollars could be heard rauling in the basket. Two Chinamen, who, had not been in the Colony twenty-four hours, went to the Lau Shing money changer's shop, No 118, Queen's Road Centr., and from a mediciae Shop, which rented part of the house, they purchased some articles. While the fati of Lau Shing was busy, one of the two men in the shop went to the cupboard, picked up a basket containing $355 in silver and made a dash for the door. The money-changer im- mediately seized the second man who was still in the shop, while his folis went after the man with the basket. In Jubilee Sireet he was arrested by a lakong, and the money recovered. The charge was provert, and Mr. F. A. Haze land sentenced the defendants to three weeks

GAMBLING AT: JOHORE,

PULKEI SCHOUL, "CANTON, No one who has had the pleasure of visiting the Pui-Kei school can have any doubt of the good work being done there for little boys, says Mrs. Wood in the S. CA Collegion. Up to 1887 there was no Christian boarding school to South China for boys under fourteen, and as Chinese are proverbially indulgent parents to their sons, the bays in many of our Christian homes were growing up to be anything but ex amples worthy of imitation. During that year ten amall boys were received as pupile into the True Light Seminary for girls, and, this was the nucleus of the Pui-Kel school, which has now grown to an enrolment of seventy pupils. As the name of the school signifies, its object is to lay a good foundation upon which to build in later years.
