THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH FRIDAY MARCH
There is no spiritualiam about it, as some modiums have claimed when they have seen my exhibitions. I don't believe in spiritualism, and believe that every manifes ation made by any medium in the past twenty years in this country is a fake, pure and simple. How such persons as Dr. Fun, Professor Syhelp and their associates can be bamboor'ed by the Mr. Pipers, Peppers, et al, surpasses my under- stauding

"Strange as it may se m to you," says Khal. dab, "I not only told you, I ut forced you write certain numbers and a certain name. you had written anything else the other man would not have been able to tell you. It's all a trick. And the trick consists in my being able "to force you, against your will, to write certain
Dumbers and the name desired."
If you believe this explanation and you have to, although you are not really quite con- vinced, you are still more startled by chaldah's
next statement.
And by this very trick, if you will think, you will see that I prove there is such a thing as thought transference. Otherwise, how could I force you to write the numbers and the name I wanted written?
"Of course, the forcing of a card on a person from a full deck is an easy mat.er, and mere. ly a maver of manipulation. Any half-rate magician can do that without much trouble. But when it comes to giving a person a pencil and piece of paper, and making him write cer- tain things, is a question of transferring your ideas, your desire, to him, t is not so easy as you may think, having seen the trick per formed.

pathist or mind reader, Take my word for it, Mrs. Pepper is no mind reader, but the veriest trickster, and the things she does can be and are duplicated every day by people on the vandeville slage.
I believe in trickety for the purpose of amusing the public, but when it comes to using. it under the cloak of spiritualism, ne so many do, or when any occuli pawers are claimed, I am the first to expose them, You would scarcely believe the opportunities given to a man in my profersion to turn his abili. 'crooked and underbadd purposes. tice to I have been offered large sums of money teach them by so-called spiritualists to some of the things I do in order that they may duplicate them and mystify their. pitiful subjects it spiritualistic seances. I have, it is needless to say, consistently refused to be a party to such deception,
"Recently completed for purposes of ex hibition a cabinet, something like a spiritualist's cabinet, from which I can produce three women, ane after the other, af er the audience has been convinced that there is no one hidden in it, that it is entirely open hath in front and rear. showed this to a medium whom I know, and he offered me more than I ever expect to make from it if I would let him use it for materializ 10g purposes. In fact, I found him trying to copy the cabinet, and had to convince him that my patent rights would be enforced if he did not stop"
About the only supernatural element aver introduced in public exhibitions is what is
really muscle reading." Washington Irving Bishop used this, and made it very successful under the disguise of mind reading. He would allow some one to hide an object at a great distance, and then, holding the person's arm, or touching his elbow, go directly to the place and find the abject, while blindfolded. This seems wonderful, and have no doubt it is father remarkable. Few people to-day can do it, but I learned the method very easily, and employ it very generally.
"I can do it under any circumstances, and it is a source of great delight to me to work a roomfal of friends into almost a frenzy of wander by finding one object after anether that they may hide about the house."

is always quite willing to "expose" about two out of every three things that he does, and to tell you candidly that they are tricks
"No," said he, the mind-reading exhbi tions that are given in public are all tricks. I do not believe a genuine bit of mind reading has ever been seen on a public platform, unless you call suge ion mind-reading. That is, it is possible for the performer to suggest certain things to his subjects and make them do them. But the hypnotic trances into which these sub- jects are supposedly thrown are all buncombe- there is nothing to it. Such things as second sight, practiced for so many years, it would seem could not longer deceive the public. Yet they do
Why, only the outer day I saw one of the leading performers of this sort of stuff throw an audience into ecstacies by using the oldest of methods,...,
"This was done by standing in the aisle of the theatre at least sixty feet from the stage on which sat the female subject. Ele promised the audience he would make her reptat any numbers they might whisper to him, without saying a word of any sort to her. As a nomi ber was whispered in his ear he would merely glance toward the stage and the woman who worked with him would immediately repeat the number, It seemed at nishing It was simple. This trick is so old that it is a shame to liave to expose it. 1 is done itus:
"Between the man who walks among the audience and the woman on the stage there in an agreement that the umbers are arranged mentally; in a square, like this:
2

"To indicate to her he looks upward and toward the left, to show that 'g' is the number the musi say he looks straight ahead: '9' is shown by a downward glance In the right-hand direction. See how easy it is?
MOST PEOPLE PASILY DECEIVED, "Yet, even now, that I have exposed this trick, the very people who read the explana tion will go to sea o her persons perform it. again and again and still be mystified by it. Almost every trick of the same kind, has been shown up' time and again, but people forget. or they are put in such a frame mind by watching the man and woman perform that they are ready subjects for being bamboozled.
My work in this line has been confined almost entirely to private entertainmente like them better, for they bring you closer to your audience, and it is much more fun to move about a small drawing-room, anong intelligent people who are all on the lookout
to catch you and to fool them, than it is to be
