BERNHARDT AT SIXTY-ONE.

IS SHE NOT WONDERFUL?

In 1881 I was one, and the most obscure, of about six friends of Mme Bernhardi who ac- companied her from the Gare St. Laznie to St. Andresse, near Havre, when she departed on her first journey to Amerion. I see her now in my mind's eye, as vividly as though that far off afternoon was yesterday, bowing and kissing her hands to her admirers as the train pulled out of the big dreary station. She wore A dainty travelling dress, a fur toque and à bunch of Parma violets fastened in her cor sage. Wherever the train halted she had an ovation. Life must have seemed bright and fair just then to the erratic and rebellious "star" who, only a short time before, had hurled defiance at Tak Theater Francais mana. gemen. Our party included, I believe, a Russian diplomat, one or two members of the Bernhardt company, and the painter, Clairin, who was then, as he is now, a devoted and loyal admirer of the tragedienne. Speaking of the outrageous advertising which Bernhardt seemed, in those days, to encourage-and certainly did not discourage-Glairio, re- member, told me with much carnestness that she detested sensationalism "Her eccentri- cities," said he, "are due to nerves. She is all nerves, indeed." And he added, "She is The quintessence of her century,"

There were more ovations for Bernhardt when she boarded the Amerique-a twelve- day boat and in those times a crack liner. The two staterooms reserved for her had been transformed, for the nonce, into a florist's shop, and next morning the enthusiasm aroused by the departing "star" when she appeased on deck filled.columns in the Paris newspapers.

AT BONE A COMPANION OF PRASANIS.

In private life the most adulated actress of her day is very simple and very interesting. She has faults (which of us has not?), but she has virues and great qualities. Her nerves may, to outsiders, make her appear "sensation. al." But in her own home she is a rare com- rade, a kind mother, a staunch friend: She is happiest, as she herself would tell you, when, after hard season at her Paris house or "00 the road," she retires to her plain little house- nu abandoned fort-on the island of Belle-tale, in Brittany. There, amid solitude and sava grey, and there only, she rests and lives naturally. Her companions are the peasants, the rude fisher folk and the cure of the village in which at times she attends mass. For, though by race a Jewess, she is...or she be lieves she is a devout Catholic. Echoes of Paris are brought down to her, even in this re- treat, hy, the artists whom she admits to her intimacy. But at Belle-Isle she shakes off the wearing tyranny, the enthralling spell, the relentless influence of the stage, and reveals herself as a mere woman. Wilty to a fault, insatiably curious, an excellent listener and a delightial talker, she makes an ideal hostess. She is interested, not only in her own art, but in the affairs of others. Life in all its phases has an untiring charm for her. That is, per- haps, the secret, if there be a secret, of the strange power and youth which, at an axe when most are ready to reture, she still enjoys. Bernhardt, from the very nutset of her career, has been idenliss. Realism, or what was once called naturalism, has not appealed to.

But like Irving, Bernhardi has lost most of her money by producing plays which, however interesting they may have been artistically, have not hit the public taste. Of all the millions that she has mide (and Maurice Grau once told a group of friends that, in this country alone, she had made over a million dollars- under the management of himself and his old partner, Henry Abbey) I question whether she has saved much more than enough to pay her expenses and keep up her life insurance policy. She has been to the Jews so often that, ofter contenting them and ministering to her depen. dents, she has left little for her own needs. To be sure, though, she has usually been able to provide herself with those superfluities which, to persons of her taste and temperament, are probably necessities.

The theatres which Bernhard has managed or "financed" for her son Maurice have swal lowed up fortunes. At one time when, if 1 mistake not, she directed the affairs of the Paris Renaissance, her creditors had acquired an agreeable habit of clamouring for "some. would allow the curtain to go up. Yet nobody thing on account every evening before they

who saw the great actress an hour later, mis- tress of her nit and apparently without thought for anything but her own audience's share with her, could have supposed that she had sordid cares lurking at the stage, door and waiting to waylay her on her return to her own dwelling. Thanks to her health, which, despite the faint ing spells to which site was once subject, has always been marvellons; thanks to her high spirits, her humour and her philosophy, she difficulties. How much larger she will be able has fought her way through all her many 10 do it would be hard for her or any one else that we owe to her, we will hope that her fare I foretell. For the sake of the rare pleasure

well tour in his country will be as successful, both artistically and financially, as her first was-close upon a quarter of a century ago.- Charles Henry Meltter in 5: F. Chronicle.

The extravagant passion of "Ruy Blas," "Hernani," "Angelo" and "Luerezia Borgia, the prefervid emotionalism of "Fedora" und "Theodora," the poetry of "Le Passant," the. mysterious complexity of "Lorenzaccio," the unbridled love of Phaedra," the pathos and witchery of "La Dame aux Camelias"-these have mitant more, infinitely more to her, than the works of the stage pessimists. With Ibsen, Zola, Tolstoi and their imitators, mighty though some may be, she has little or no sympathy. Yet, now and then, she has made incursions into the domain of real-wanglee, Ch. 5.5, 1,468, R. Lincoln, 18th ism. Not the last of her marvellous achieve- ments is, her interpretation of that Cesarine

whom we shall see when she revives La Femme de Clade." After the glamour of Victor Hugo had in a measure become dimmed (though it has never quite faded in her eyes), she fell for a time under the more glittering but less lolly influence of the younger Dumas, For Emite Augier, in his own way a great dramatist, she has always professed scorn. For the authors of the Theater Libre school she has had only hatred,

Of late years it has been the fashion among many whose judgment deserves respect to compare Bernhardi, or rather to contrast her, and to contrast her unfavourably with Eleonore Duse. ' yield to none in admiration of the Italian. But it seems fatite to me to weigh her in the balance with her French rival, Duse is essentially a realist, an analyzer of her own soul, which she illuminates. Derphardt, on the other hand, lights up the souls and ex- presses the passions less of herself than of the characters whom she impersonates. She has art. She has wings. Dute never has wings, and when she is most charming, she is some times as in "Magda"-most false to the character whom she should interpret.

Bernhardt, again, has, brains. She is an intelligence of a high order. Duse also has brains. But she owes her triumphs more to her intuitions and her instinct than to her art, her logic or her sense of truth, For everything that Bernhardt does or suggests upon the boards she could supply a reason. I doubt whether Duse could explain her action in any of her characters, unless by telling us that she "feels" she must play the parts just as she plays them.

*

In other words, Duse is not critical, ar Bernhardt is. She acts spontaneously, as Patti Bang, Bernhardt is of the same order of art as Jean de Reszke. But she has temperament,"

# which was ever lacking in the great tenor. She vibrates, even though she thinks, and she compels thrills. I speak of her as I knew her from my youth up, during the quarter of a century in which it was my privilege and my delight to study her. What she may accom plish, or what she may not accomplish when she next appears liere on her last tour I do not know.

15 HOSPITABLE TO A FAULT.

So much for the artist. Now for the woman, Irving died poor. And the divine Sarah, when ger time comes-say, in a half century or somay die poorer. At the outset of her career (the most fantastically brilliant in stage annals) she succeeded in loading herself down with debt, From that false start she has never, save for a few months or years, recovered. But she has not grumbled. Her own lavish ness-her inability to deny herself the gratifi cation of her whims, her insatiable hunger for the rare and beautiful, whether it chance to take the shape of a Lalique hatpin or cinque cento triptych-have helped to impoverish her. Generons to a fault, reckless as the women of ber race are rarely reckless, she has quan
