·FORMAL PETITION TO 'THE THRONE,

Our Chinese contemporary, Chung Kwok Vat Po, published this morning an account of the proceedings which took place at the meeting of the shareholders of the Canton-Hankow railway held in Canton the other day. It was agreed that a telegram should be transmitted to the Board of Commerce in Peking stating that the capital required to proceed with the construction of the Canton-Hankow line had been placed at 20 million dollars, to be raised by four million shares of 55 each.

la Canton, shares have been allotted to the amount of 10 million dollars, and up to the rath inst., the sum of $1,648,700 odd had been collected on account of the first call.

The money thus subscribed has been depo- rited in the following banks in Canton-the “Hìp Sing Kin, the Yuen Fung Yun, and the

Yee Shin Yuen, all leading banks in Canton.

Telegrams have been received from various quarters abroad making application for shares to the amount of 6 million dollars, and a large demand still exists for shares in the new line.

The merchants of Canton have also des- patched a telegram to the Shangpu asking that Board to memorialise the Throne on the sub

ao Imperial Edict may be issued, granting per mission to proceed with the construction of the railway, and permitting the merchants to undertake the work and retain control of the line.

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF POST-CARDS.

"I have been done again, but let me catch him and i'll give him what fot,” said a shop. keeper last night in anything but a sweat temper. A thief bas been hovering around Reaconsfi lil Arcade for some time and the little pranks he has been playing on a tobic conist shop in that vicinity makes bim all the more wanted by that party, and should he be caught red-handed he will pay the penalty for his misdeeds. On Saturday night, Messrs. Sayce and Company, while making prepara- tions to close up, were gathering in the pictura frames that are hung outside the shop, when to their surprise it was discovered that a large picture frame containing about twenty-four post-cards had mysteriously disappeared from its place. The matter was reported to the. policeman on that beat, and it was said that a watch would be kept for the post-card collec- tor. Messrs.. Sayce and Company did not ex-" peet the thief to return again, but an employd sat behind the window or guard. Customers had to be attended to, and the matter was for gotten for the present. Clasing time arrived, and in gathering in the frames again, one of

cards was found also to have vanished. A report to the policeman on duty in that vicinty was made, and the satisfaction that they got was that a watch would be placed near the shop, The matter is still an unsolved riddle, for the person who had the nerve to make a raid two aights in succession on the postcards and re- move such large frames without being seen or

No one who has had the pleasure of visiting the Pui-Kai school can have any doubt of the good work being one there for little boys, Boys Mrs. Wood in the 5. C. Collegian. Up to 1887 there was no Christian boarding school in South Chian for hoyr under fourieen, and as Chinese are proverbially indulgent patents to their sons, the boys in many of our Christian homes were growing up to be anything but ex amples worthy of imitation. During that year ten small boys were received as pupils into the Tree Light Seminary for girls, and this was the nucleus of the Pui-Kei school, which has now grown to an enrolment of seventy pupils. She danced projects. or hopped on one foot as if in the mazes of a serpentine dance. She gesticulated and pointed to the sixpenny spot of water. on her horny pedal extremity. It burned; one could see it fizzing. The rest of the foot looked quite black in comparison with the tiny white spot caused by the drop of water. She formed almost, and yet did not forget to set forth the full contents of her mind in large, choice, precise, unadulterated language, giving her opinion of the sinner in an oration which comprehended all his misdeeds, the misdeeds and character of his mother and grandmothers, away back to the fourth and fifth generation, when the original cause of the trouble had something to do with a pig. Then the gang of coal beavers fell on all the water carriers in sight and emptied paitfuls of slops-sooty slops-into the buckets of water. The coolies that escaped had little remaining in their buckets when they stopped running. The others marched slowly, disconsolately, wrath- fully back to the unknown land whence they got their firet load of water. Quite a Biblical

Chan Kam and Hu Sam, coolies, were charged at the Police Court this morning for having, with three others not in custody, while armed with offensive weapons, robbed Lag au, the hoatswain of a rowing boat, of jewel. lery and clothing to the value of £82, and used prisonal violence towards the complainant on the 4th inst. It appears that the defendants in company with others engaged a sampan at 1.30 anchorage at West Point. They boarded a a.m., on the 4th instant, and went to the junk junk, the boatswain of which was asleep; he was awakened and two men were placed as guards over him, while the others searched for pro- perty. They secured $82 worth of goods, and, after using violence towards the boatswain of the boat, decamped. A report was made to the Water Police and the men were subsequently artesied. Inspector Langley, who prosecuted, asked for a week's remand, which was granted by Mr. C. A. D. Melbourne.
