JAPANESE COMPETITION,

All' not gol that glitters, and the prospect of extended and profitable shipping' enterprise la the Fur Rast, now that the" Russo-Japanese .war is over, 'is 'qualified by a variety of conț sideraline. The Japanese, for one thing, appear to have by no means exhausted themselves i definting their Muscovite enemy. We were freight report issued from Hongkong by the reminded the other day, in the interesting

·Norwegian 6rm of Messis: Aagaard, "Thoresen and Co., that the mercantile abilities of the Japanese are, if anything, superior to their. martial qualities, and that their steamers, no longer required as transports, will “one by one, and dosen by doren," be thrown on to the market. Already it is stated, several of the regular lines which were kept up by chartered foreign tonnage have again put on Japanese boats. On the other hand, we know that this step, inevitable though it is, will not be fully Carried out for some little time yet.. Mr. Kondo, the chairman of the Nippon Company, for instance, announced at the recent half-yearly meeting of that undertaking that all the com pany's services could not be reinstated until towards the end of 196, owing to the demand

for transports by the Japanese Government, [35 For a time, therefore, sundry British ships "will continue to ply in established Japanese scri vices, but in the latter half of 19 6 we are told that the Nippon Company will have surplus tonnage of its own, owing to the release of trans. port, and that the company may experience "a hard time. It certainly has pot done so since the war, for it boasts that it has learned how to use foreign' steamers' in an economical manner, and while so employing them it bas been earning large sums from the Govern- ment. Its profit during the half-year ended September last was so large that, after paying a dividend equal to 17 per cent., and putting 1,000,000 yen to a special repair fund for tribs port steamers, the sum carried forward was

periods. And at the end of this half-year the Company had still under chapter 70,000 tons of foreign shipping. All this suggests that when things become quite normal again, and the whole of the company's 150,000 tons-another 5,000 tons is building-is available for or dinary work, this great Japanese enterprise will be fitter than ever to deal with that "great

the Chargeurs Reunis Companies to organise a new service from Antwerp to Chino, Japan, and San Francisco, and home by West Coast ports and the Straits of Magellan. The clever ness of the Japanese as merchant scamship owners bas its counterpart, so far as other countries are concerned, in the organising ability of the Germans. The Norwegian report to which we have referred anys that the German have acquired practically a monopoly of the Bangkok trade, and that they are alle powerful in that of the Straits Settlements. Indeed, the way in which "the German com- "panies have been able to expend their eastern "trade commands entire admiration." What with the Japanese and the Germags, and an over-supply of tonnage to boot, the prospects in the Far East of British shipping, with its lack of co-operation, are not of the brightest.- Shipping Garetto,”-

pointed out that a freshly-cut slice of pineapple laid on a piece of beefsteak will, in a compar atively short time, cause softening, swelling and partial digestion of the meat for consider able depth. from the surface. Dr. Wingrove says that the reputation of the pineapple has suffered, among other reasons, from the fact that far too much is eaten at a time, and that the fibrous part is swallowed as well as the juice. To obtain its fall digestive value, one quadrant of a slice half-an-inch thick is ample for one meal. It should be well masticated and the fibrous part should be rejected. it must not be cooked and should be just ripe. The preserved form has practically no diges tive power. Apart from its use as a digestive, the juice has a strong solvent action upon plastic exudation, such as diphtheria mem (335

in close contact with a corn for eight bour, it will be so softened as to admit of rady removal. Again, it softens the horny papillae in keratosis of the tonsil, and quickly telleves the prickly sensation complained of in that condition.
