small parcels of cargo only, the boats accopling having perforce to be satisfied with part ear. goes. When it in added that a charter was concluded Saigon to Vladivostock, of a medium size steamer, middle of the month loading, at, 49 cents, all is unid concerning the tonal busi ness of the fortnight in respect of Salgon. Arrivals there of supplies of new crop's grain are reported to continue small, with the mills each and all requiring quite a lot yet to fill old contracts, hence prospects are not for immediate requirements of further tonnage.

From Bangkok, though prospects are better, there has been no special demand for outside boats, nor are river freights just at present such as to leave any larger opening for on-liners, and from Java there is nothing doing.

The first boats have taken the barth locally. to load for Newchwang. As for return freights thence to Canton, it is extintated that opening rates may be something like 37 cents per picul, meanwhile it is not at present expected that the port will be free from ire and open for navigation much before the last days of the month.

From Doilo, business has been reported doue for Tientsie, a small cargo at 50 cents, and for Hongkong, a boat at zo cents per picul.

From Hongay, a charter has deen done for Swatow at Sr.go and another for Amay at $2.50.

per tax.

Japan coal freights have risen, somewhat over and above the absolutely wretched level they have been held at. Rates to Shanghai are $1.40, to this port $1.30 has been paid for large steamers locally. There are inquiries, for the various coast ports, which have not as far been met at shippers' quotations. It is a fact worth noting though that the high coal prices appear to have entirely stopped business Japan to Ningapore. In this direction no quotation has been forthcoming for quite a long time,

"On time," there are the fixtures of two steamers on record locally fóra 3ud 12 months' term respectively!

Concerning sail freights there is nothing new
