HONGKONG'S DEMANDS MAY INCREASE

THE PRICES.'.'

HE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH FRIDAY MARCH

TRADE OP 'STAM,

REMARKABLE PROGRESS INDICATED.

The imports of Sirm in 1904, the last year for which reliable figures have been furnished, amounted to 101,386,415 likals (tikal 28 cents; according to the U.S. Consular report. Of these Bangkok passed over 78 roooo including oleven and a half millions worth of incial for coins. Singapore leads with 25,000,000 tikals or 30 per cent of the total imports, followed by Hongkong with nearly 19,000,00, or 24 per cent. Of Singapore's shipment to Siam, Eng land is down for fully three-fifths and Germany for one-fifib, Great Britain and Ireland follow Singapore and fongkong with 15.347,000, DI 19.5 per cent of the total.

We have noticed froni time to time, says the Pioneer, the rise in the price of commun rice in Bengal, where in some districts Lumine rates now prevail, for in Jessore and Khulna a rupee can only purchase between seven, and nine icers. We have been at the pains to inquire as to the cause of the scarcity, for sumours have circulated that the rice supply has been affected by demands for Japan and the East. Further, this does not seem to be the case, for direct shipments to Japan are practically nodiinal, though small quantities may have been con- signed to Hongkong for transhipment there. The real reasons for the existing state of things

These are significant figures. They indicate a healthy, coastni growth. The rate of increase, if not remarkable, is certainly satisfactory to the Sinmese. The Germans and English, long accustomed to look, upon the Orient as uo- progressive and conservative, are looking with some alarm at Siam's, China's and Japan's fonts to emancipate themselves from the

A SIAMESE PRINCES POSITION.

Judgment has just been given in the Suprime Court at Penang on a question affecting juris diction in Kedah. We had imagined the matter had long since 'been allowed to drop, says the Bangkok Times, and certainly the decision ought to be a well considered one, A year, or some such lon thy period, ngo Mr. J. M. P. Smith brought an action in Tening. claiming damages.against II, H. the Sultan of Kedah for an alleged breach of contract, to grant a concession of land for oil in Kedah. The point was raised that the Court had no Jurisdiction over the Sultan of Kedah, and Judgment has been reserved on that question until now. We take the following summary of the decision from the Pinang Gazette: His Lordship (Mr. Justice Law), in the course of his judgment, said that a claim for damages for hreach of contract of land in a foreign country could be iried in England if the defendant was prezent there, and that it could be tried here if the defendant is present in the Colony or if he has property in the Colony. Ait is admitted that the defendant has property in the Colony, His Lardship must hold that, as far as the question they were now considering. was concerned, there was nothing to prevent this action being tried here in this Colony." One gathers from the above that the Sulian of the Sinmere dependency of Kedali is regarded simply as a Siamese subject.

THE U, S. ARMY,

THE ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report of the Military Secretary. of the United States Army is singular in being wholly divested of that optimistic official tone to characteristic of public documents, says the He gives the actunt "New York Nation," number of desertions during the year as 6,533, or more than one in every ten of the 63,022 "Of th.se 63,0 a soldiers, 37,254 were meb.. discharged on expiation of their enlistment, and 9.460 by reason of disability or Because of a court-martial sentence; while 189 were retired. and 377 died or were kill. In ail, 38,813 men, or more than 61 per cent, of the entire enrolment, left the army in a year. In other words, if their places have been filled, more than 61 per cent. of the men in the army are raw recruits. Undoubtedly, one of the men discharged re-enlisted, but not many, for the great majority of men return to civil life as soon as possible.

BANGKUK'S HOUSE ACCOM- MODATION,

DEMAND FOR DWELLING-HOUSES,

It appears that Bangkok, like Hongkang, suffers from a lack of house accommodation and the remarks of the Siam Fréz Pris would, In the main, apply to Hongkong as well as Bangkok.
