MARRIAGE OF KING ALEONSO

AND PRINCESS ENA.

CUSTOMS TO HE OBSERVER.

It is a rule in Spain with regard to alliances contracted heiw royal families that the signatures be exchanged before the affianced bride enters her future capital.

Nowhere is tradition more strictly adhered to than in Spain, and the ceremonial which will be observed for the marriage of the King has been fixed in accordance with time-honoured prescriptions,

Princess Ena's hand, having been officially asked in marriage, an Ambasador Extra- ordinary, provided with special powers, will proceed to London, and it is there, says the "Gaulois," that the signatures will be affixed on the contract, which will be ratified by King Edward VI and King Alfonso XIII.

It is not yet certain whether Princess Ena still make her entry into Spain by the Northern frontier or by Andalusia. If the former ronte be chosen, the Princess will be received at Iron with royal honours and slutet by an extra- ordinary embassy in the King's name, among the personages present being the English Ambassador with his staff. The official pre- sentations having been made, the special train will at nace start, the Princess being saluted at the local every hak on the journey by authorities.

WHERE SHE WILL RESIDE. The Prado Palace, where I rincess Ens will probably reside, is about six miles from Madrid. As it has no railway station, one will be specially built in the park of the Casa de Campo, so as to obviate the necessity of pass. ing through Madrid. At this special station Princes Ena will be received by the King, the Queen-mother, the Prince of the Austrias, the Infantas of Spain, the Infint Don Ferdinand, and the members of the Government.

Thence the Princess, her mother, the King, and the Quera-mther will enter the royal car riage and drive to the Palace of the Prado, King Alfonso and his mother finally re urning

to Madrid.

The rights and privileges which a section of the Chinese are eager to recover from foreigners have, continues the Tokyo journal, primarily been conceded as the result of international co plications caused by the ignorant masses. The Chinese Government, by force of circum- stances, has been compelled to grant foreigners railway, mining, and other concessions and even grant the cession of territory. The Boxer outbreak, for example, cost China, besides an indemnity of 450 million taels, the practical loss of her sovereignty over Manchuria.
