being said about the dispute between the Viceroy and the gentry regarding the building of the railway. There is little change in the situation. There is no doubt the gentry and any others are giving the question serious thought. Yesterday was the day for receiving the first payment on the railway' shares. A interested and the gentry are persistent in maintaining that the money will not be handed over to the officials. The officials are quiet and say the Government will build the road. A well-informed inan told me to day that it was probable that the Government would let the

lands, with minerals of every sort awaiting A. S. WATSON & CO., the arrival of the developing agent. It has been understood for some time that the Sultan was willing to sell Johore to the British Government for a certain rumour alleging that he wished £35,000 a year and a reversion on capital which would go to his family after his death. So strong have these rumours been that practically everybody in the southern Settlement be lieved them to be founded on fact, and the continued absence of the Sultan and his sons in England has given colour to these reports. If the Strails Government should become the superiors of Johore Singapore would benefit immensely. Instead of being a mere port, it would have an immense country behind it from which to draw supplies, whereby it would attain the rank of a producing port, the base of an im mense area of fertile country. The railway io Burma could be established, rights of development granted, and an era of prosperity ensured for lobore such as the people of that country never dreamt of in the past, Johore has an area of about 9,000 square miles. The population is remarkable in containing a larger proportion of Chinese than natives, viz., Chinese, 150,000, Malays, 35,000, Javanese, 15,000. It will be a wonderful boon which may entirely change the outlook in Singapore if Johore is acquired by the British Government, and that would seem to be the interpretation of Sir John Anderson's hurried departure for England.
