Thomson's office, whe appeared for the plaintiff, stated that the claim had been made for money lent, but it should have been made for money obtained by de fendant on behalf of plaintiff, and Mr. Gardiner asked leave to amend the plain accordingly. His Honour said he could not allow sich amendment without the consent of the other side, The defendant refused to consent to the amendment and the case was dismissed with costs, but with leave to the plaintif tering another suit.
CAPTAIN Jayawardenr,'of the Ceylon Valon! icers, on being questioned recently as to the proposed world-wide inter-colonial shooting. competition, said that the idea was quite feasible; and that he was already in coires. pondence with some of the Secretaries of Colonial Rifle Associations. The Bermudas were quite agreeable to joining the competi tion, but replies from several places had yet, to be received. Cap. Jayawardene said also that there were prospects of Ceylon taking part in the next inter-part shooting competi tion. This competition, which is annually held in August, is now competed for by Hongkong, Singapore, and Burma. Captain Jayawardene had addressed the Secretary of the Singapore Rifle Association carly in January on the subject, and said he expected a reply shortly,
THE carelessness of a "lily-tooted Chinuse woman resulted on Wednesday in an accident which might have been attended with very serious results, and may you lay the woman hors de combat for a while. As tram car No. 16 was rounding the bend just before Harbour master's office, the woman wanting to alight, instead of waiting for the car in stop, stepped off as it was slowing down, and, as usual. stepped off the "wrong way." Hei feet were no support to her and the result was that her face came into violent contact with mother earth, much to the detriment of the farmer. When picked up by a bystander she was found. to have sustained a nasty ent just beside the right eye, which bled profusely, as well as cut lips, and bruised arms and legs. She appear. ed utterly dazed by the stock but after sitting awitile on the side walk to recover her senses, she suffered herself to be sent to the Governe ment ivil Hospiral. Of course, the usual in- quisitive crowd quickly congregated, and the remarks heard bom some of the gapers were somewhat more personal than sympathetic.

THE Espects of Japan will be the first Kusght of the Garter for the past 300 years to receive the star of the Order in its original form, from which it was diverted in the seventeenth, century. King Edward, who is, of course, the head of the Order, had the stat recently altered to its present shape which, it has been ascer tained, was the original form of the star when it was added to the insignia in the sixteenth century. In addition to the star the Emperor receives from King Edward the badge, surcoal, and collar of the Order which complete the insignia. These will be conveyed to the Emperor by Prince Arthur of Connaught, by' whom His Majesty will be invested with the Order of the most ancient, exclusive, and dignified knighthood of the world. insignia become, the actual property of the. Emperor after his investiture, as is always the case when a reigning sovereign is make a, K.G. but when the Order is conlehed on an English subject the insignia must be returned to the English sovereign on the death of the knight, Some sovereigns have had very valuable copies made the star of the Order; the Tsar is said 10 have the most valuable Star of the Garter in existence; it is made of the purest white dia- monds, and is reputedly worth £10,000. It was once the custom for all foreign princes when admitted to the Osder to come to Windsor for the investiture ceremonies, but nowadays the English sovereign dispatches a special ambas. | sador to the Court of the newly-made K.G., who bestows on bim the insigma and perlarins the ceremony of investiture.-Jafun Chronicle,

The man who attacked Mr. Lafer- rière turned out to be a former cuolie in his employ who knew the ins and outs of the house well.
