During the past 15 years à gigantic work has slowly been going forward, without ostentation. and without one word of public praise, in the Egyptian depintment of the British Museum,

It is now slowly coming to an end.

It is nothing less than the practical over hauling of the most pricelém collection of its kind in the world, and its rearrangement in chronological order.

REARRANGING THE ROOMS.

The rearranging of the roues has been the biggest task. It is ntr possible to stand at one end of the Egyptian forms, and go right through and find everything in strict chronolo gical order. What this bas meant can only properly be appreciated by, the late staf which has successfully curried the work through. The physical labour alone was very heavy, fat some of the big figures weighed. five naŭ six lens apiece.

It is the placing of the huge Egyptian coffins against the pilasters for the whole length of the hall on either side. The undertaking of the Company having been transferred to Government in terms of the Tanjong Pagar Dock' Ordinance, 1905, as from the joth June last, your directors have not any accounts to submil.

It is interesting to know that within the last five years the value of mary of the Egyptian relics in the museum has been increased to per cent. Many of them, indeed, are almost priceless, and the value of arranging them in chronological order is thereby also increased. The decision of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in regard to the Lien chau Massacre has come to hand and is very interest. ing to all foreign residents in China, of course.. this is the decision of a private body of men and not of the United States Government, but it is. probable, that the Government will not do anythin New thing in opposition to the wishes of the Board. The first part of the decision was made in the following, words: "In no case whatever will the board receive indemnity for the beloved dead, nor will it accept indemnity of a punitive

character."

The board, however, 'considers that it is not unfair to consider the question of in- demnity from the view, point of replacing the property destroyed at the time of the murders of Mrs. Machle, Amy Machle, Mr. Peale, Mrs. Peale and Miss Chestnut, holding that the mission buildings were used for the benefit of the Chinese, the schools for the edu cation of the Chinese children and the two hospitals for the care of sick and injured Chi- nese of all classes, wholly irrespective of their

The missionary fully understands that in accepting This work he accepts some, risks, and if, like his Master, he is called upon to lay down his life, no bill of damages should be sent to Cesar. The blood of missionaries who have devoted their lives to the uplifting of Chinese should not be estimated in dollars and cents, nor is there any disposition on our part to insist on a financial punishment, which, as we are aware, in such circumstances would probably fall in large part upon those who are innocent..

We wish the Chinese Governmeal and people to feel that the missionaries are the real friends of China and the Chinese, and that we are not disposed to do ourselves or to countenance in others anything that is unjust or that is dictated by a spirit of revenge.
