MUSIKALIAN«PHARLING BLKEZ..
MIGRATING TO DUTCH WATERS
The Torres Straits pearling dect that has, anya Sydney contemporary, for years made its headquarters at Thunday Island, appears to be in a fair way to leave the feland for good. "Jim" Clark, the king of the pearling trade, han taken ons deer away, and others are likely
to follow.
WHY THEY ARE GOING. "The`reasons given for the departure of the" float, vary a good deal. Much is made of the Commonwealth legislation, which will deprive, the boats of the South Sea Lalanders, who form
the great bulk of the crews; but there is ap other reason, namely, that all the shallow grounds near-hursday Island are pretty well Ashed sultor the present, and it is understood that some good groups have been found among the Dutch Islands. The depth at which a diver works, varies from 8 to 20 fathoms, Plenty of divers go down, al over za fathom, -but it is apt to. paralyte thèm when, they got much of it. The Japanese are the best divers, being very strong, and very per Distent. The South-Sex divers and Manila- men are more cunning at Anding shell than are the jups, but the latte, will walk with dogged" perseverance for miles under water, hunting for shell, and is the long run they will outwerk and out at the other.
NO GAME FOR THE WHITE MAN. White divers are just as good na any other divers-in fact, the pimeer diveis of the Straits were white men-but they do not care about the slavery at the price. They can do
· better at niher trades, and in the přesedi riale of the shell market there is no chance of white divers taking to the dress again. The Japanese have mide the trade of diving almal their own, and they send thousands of pounds away to Japan every year in money orders to their relatives. ¡Á Tew Manitàmen' and South Sea boys are in the business, but not very many. They do not like the hard work,.
THE PEARLS.
The divers do not expect to get many pearls of value, as the worth of a pearl depends so much oùis shape and lustre. Hundreds, nay, thousands, ol bonfide pen∙ls are got that are of very little value, owing to defective shape, and then are called "Farrick.". They are made into larocher and pins, and have a mar ket value but nothing comparable to mues shaped' peasle. The vile of the shell is suņi». posed to at least pay all expenses, and pegyla are clear profit, but the price !f shell is low now, and the deep-diving means loss of time in getting men up and down, so there would be „po wonder that the boats are off to other grounds. The "old ground," near Thursday Island, has been fished for years, and is only 11 about g fathoms de », bot át is pretty/well fish- ed out now. The expers my that a ground is abon re-stocked with pearl oyster if left alone, se this ground my renew topayahibty,
