THE SANITARY BOARD ELECTION.
The announcement which we are were in
a position to make last evening that Mr. Henry Humphreys, of the old-established firm of Messrs. John D. Humphreys and
WHISKY. Su, bad come forward as a second can- didate for the two vacancies on the Sanitary Board, will have been received by the com munity in general with considerable · satió- 'faction. Mr. 'Humphreys is a successful} man of business, and, in no restricted sense, a capable financier, worthily following in the footsteps of his father, the late Mr. John. D. Humphreys, than whom a more popular or a more candid critic of public affairs has not been known in Hongkong. It will be

A. S. Although the personnel of the Sanitary Department had not at that period attained to the number that has been reach ed as a result of the recommendations of the expert investigation, held a couple of years ago, the duties devalving upon the mem. hers of that body were none the less ar 134 duous, and quite as much appreciated then as they are to-day. As we have stated at the outset, Mr. Humphreys, sen, was a fearless critic, and spoke his mind openly, with characteristic independence and freedom from the thrall of cliquedom. In Mr. Henry Humphreys, whose public career outside the commercial line, will, we hope, be now en- tered upon by his election to the Sanitary Board, we trust to find a chip of the old:

A most interesting account of the operationk of the P & O. Steam Navigation Company during the past year was given by Sir Thomas at the sixty-fifth annual motting, which was Sutherland, chairman of the board of directors

One of the questions which interests all directed the "authorities" to the choice of travellers is that of the fairness of the passenger "The New Boy" for representation. There fares. It is easier to play Bob Brierly in the "Ticket-of-Leave Man" or Dick Phenyl in "Sweet Lavender-although only Edward Terry can play the latter part-than Charley in "Charley's Aunt" or Archibald Rennick in "The New Boy." Most people can simulate emotion; very law can restrain their natural exhuberance of spirits in a part which calls for high jinks; the difficulty is to be boisterous in natural way.
