PUBLIC OFFICEKS SALARIES.

The agitation in Ceylon for an increase in the salaries of the Government officials seems to have resulted in the usual. way. Under the cloak of elevating the position of the junior members of the staff, the Government have brought in a scheme for enhancing the salaries of the higher paid officials and left the rank and file practically in the same. place they occupied previously. The result of the voting on the scheme introduced by the Government has not yet been learned, but in his opening speech the Lieut-Gover. nor outlined the general principles of his proposal. Much space is devoted to an ex planation of the scheme ns it affects the well-to-do officials, but beyoni "sympally and consideration the junior service, re-
