that the remarkable occurrence is to be at tnbued ip several of the local Chinese fire. brands, whose attitude upon the boycott which has been in progress for some time now against America and American gonds, dictated the strike at the Docks. Happily. prompt action | by the Tanjong Pagar authorities find the Chinese Protectorate was taken to cope with affairs, and strict measures, (including threats of deportation) nipped the discontent in the j | bud, and a very 'briel space sufficed to bring the men to their senses. They resumed work shortly after midday, This morning a rez presentative of the Free Press at about to 'clock saw the Acme, and the dock was alive with workers, the coolies all steadily passing to and from the ship with ballast, and the iron ‚ınakers hammering away at her sides.

In due course he was informed of this refusai and went down to inquire what was wrong. He was told by a dozen of the head coolies, who where brought before him, that a notice had been posted at the docks dating any coolie to work on ot at the Arme. This notice was seen and proved to be anonymous. The coolics were then told that they would either have to return to work or be deported and were given till afternoon to decide which they would choose.
