hh fuch good results no dividend can be re- commanded i your Directors believe that you will see the desirability (not to say alty) of following the course they propose; to carry on the mill properly more capțial it re- quired and falling the lane of debenturaï the only source from which this can be obtainable is to retain any profits made until a sufficient amount has been accumulated į last year bas| dons a great deal towards this end and given- à continuance of profitable working, the Mill will soon be in an excellent financial position. It may not be out of place to remind you that the mill cost Tis. 267,030 more than the amount of capital imised, and you can use from the acidstein, for Shanghai. counts before you that it requires Tis, 200,000 more to provide for stocks of material. This want of working capital has entailed continual

trouble to your Directors and is responsible for some of the unavoidable results of the past: The amount written off plant and machinary may seem large bat the total writings off (includ, ing this) fortbonine years the mill has been work.

ing is rather lessthan 25 per cent. Whenthe pro- pectus of thle mill was issued it was thought that 74 per cent per sanum would have to be written off but we have not come near that. It will-be seen that the position of the debenture bolders is a very excellent one; the stipulation that as per cost of net profits should go to the Trustees for their redemption was made in the expectation that all the debentures authorised would be taken up; the small proportion issued makes this a very onerous condition, and sub- less the debenturas coma Into favour they will be paid off as soon as possible. It will be noted with antisfaction that loans (bank and otherwise) which last year stood at Tis, 138,000 have been reduced to Tix. 180,000. The mill under the efficient management of My Wood, supported by his staff, has been maintained in thorough working order during the year and out yarn will bear favourable comparison, with any produced locally.

No questions were asked and the following resolutions were carried unanimously without remark:

Proposed-by the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Jameson-That the report and accounts for the year ended the 30th of September 1995, as presented, be accepted and passed."

Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Chow Shing-ching-That the election of Messrs. F. Ayscough and. M.. March to the

Board of Directors be confrmad. "

Proposed by Mr. Jameson, seconded by Mr. Ayscough-That Mr. W. H. Posia be re-clacted a director.

Proposed by Mr. Seaman, seconded by Mr. Taylor That Mr. Arthur R. Leake, Chartered Accountant, be re-elected auditor for the pre- sent year,

The meeting then anded.

AMERICAN GIRLS LURED TO CHINA AND SOLD.

The following ji taken from the London Mor- ning Leader of 19th alt-

New York, Wedacedny.. The Government officials at Washington have put the, Chicago police on the 'track of two women in the latter city who, acting with agents in Shanghai and Hongkong, have been faring American and Canadian girls to Chink. These women tall their dupes that fabulous

sums are to be earned as maids in the service of rich Chinamen. As soon as the women ar rive in China they are placed under guard and sent to the palaces of the purchasers.

The Chicago police have the names of jo girls who have been sold at prices ranging from 500 dols, to 1,500 dola.

The American Consu! at Shanghai, in con junction with the English authorities, is secur ing evidence of the traffic. It is known that. one American girl named Hilda Olson, aged 20, committed suicide.

Two young woman escaped from ́ibeir, cap. tors and sought refuge in a natoon frequented by American and English sailors in Shanghai. They told their story, and this led to consular forastigations.

The Chicago police assert that several wo- men make annual pilgrimages from the far East on behalf of Chinese merchants, escort- ing not only dissolute but lanocent and unsur pecting girls back with them, calling them

secretarios and travelling companions," The Goverment officials admit that they are.
