Mr. Burke made use of, as a medium, a sterillued broth, or bouillon, rendered semi. solid by the addition of gelatine. On this he. sprinkled a minute trace of a salt of radium, After some time microscopic growths appeared, which increased in size, and, apparently, bud. ded, but which, remarkable to say, were soluble in water. I with, in what follows, to indicate how it may be possible that these growths bave been produced, though not having seen Mr. Burke's " organisms," I do not wish' to' dogmatise, Professor Rutherford
and Mr.
Soddy some years ago, discovered that the power of discharging an electroscope, possessed by
compounds of radiem and iborium, was due to the evolution of a gas, to which the name "emanating" waarplied. It may be mention ed la passing that in all probabillly the source of this gas is not in the fum compounds, but in a much more selive substance, contained in perbapi all, or almost all, specimens of com- mercial thorium, in a substance to which the radiotherium has been given, many name hundred thousand times more "active" (inq more capable of discharging an electroscope) than crude therium, as recently discovered by Dr. Hahn, working in the laboratory of Univer. aity College. Messrs. Rutherford and Soddy discovered that these gases or emanations were condensable at a low temperature, probably to solid bodies; that their life was a comparative -—ly-short- one-j-that-half-the-life-period-of-the zadium emanation was little over four and a half days; and that the thorium emanation would be half gone in something under a minute. Rutherford has continued investigat Ing the products of change of the radium Amanation, but there, although of great interest, do not immediately benr on our subject,

The solution of this gas in water has the co- rious property of coagulating white of 8 or albumen. What is the precise nature of the change produced is unknown.
