The Prince of Wales presided on the 6th August, at the third annual meeting of the general committed of the 'mperial Cancer Research Fund at Malborough House, Londoa. Sir William Church, in moving the adoption of the annual raport, gave an account of the Investigation detailed in the scientific reports. With reference to the statistical side of the. investigation, he said the additional data which had been obtained confirmed the conclusions arrived at last year that cancer was not associ ated with peculiarities of diet, climato, or made of life. On the other hand, the importance of the ages at which cancer appeared had acquired greater algnificance. The experimental investi gation had yielded results of remarkable interest raising questionsfin"connection with cancer which had not been suspected before. Thus, if had been possible to perpetuate malignant new growths through successive generations of mice, in such a way that the cells had appeared in be gifted with powers of perpetual multipli CALion under favourable circumstances. This power was not, however, manifested at all times and under all conditions. The results which had been obtained in mice pointed to the necessity for yet more closely studying the

This property definitely separated cancer from the known infective diseases, In confirmation of this, healthy mice, when kept. for long periods in association with others suffer ing from cancer, had not acquired the disease. The action of radium and radio-active solutions had been carefully studied, and there was no doubt that both times exerted an in fluence on the growth and development. of both normal and tumour Ussues. No evidence, however, had yet been obtained that tadium emanations had any selective or specia) action on tumor tissues, while the amount of radio- active solutions necessary to pr duce any Action on the tissues far exceeded what could be introduced into the badly, with safety.

The Prince of Wales, in replying to a vote of thanks, said: "My lord and gentlemen- You will not expect me to touch upon the highly technical subjects dealt with in the Annual report and in De Bashford's scientific reports, which have been circulated, among you. But we all can recognise in them murh | Amigo, Ger. za, 821, 1. Iversen, 19th Oct.-- evidence of Liborious and careful investigation, and of sure prav ress. These reports cover a very large field of investigation, acil show that no line of inquiry, however unpromising, is being overlooked. The search after fresh

ceived idras of the origin si cancer has cleared the way for further advance, while the number of hitherto unsuspected icts certainly giver hope of final success. The researches in the various British Colonies and Protectorates con tinue to yield information of increasing value, and prove that the investigation is truly an Im perial one. Lait year I mentioned that India had recently bear included in the scope of in qairy. Since then India has contributed, addi” tional and "interesting facts. Among the va. alous races and castes of that great Emulte, differing so widely in customs, mode of living. and diet, cancer has been shown to be mal uncommon. It is found in vegetarians, as we'l as in' those who eat fish and meat, Increasing interest in the question is being manifested in the larger self-governing Colonies. Many ro puted remedies for cancer have been sent to our laboratories during the past year for exa misation, not only from this country, but from India, Australia, South Africa, and America, Unfortunately any value they may have pos sessed to those who believed in them bas bean based upon the application of the term "can; cer" to diseases which are not trec malignant growths. They have not survived the test of | Quinta. Ger, 54., 18%, Frihm, 9th Dei;– scientific examination. It le gratifying to know that our work is brite, carried out in harmor nious conjunction with that of French, German, and American scientists In conclusion, i have to araure the executive committee, gene- ral superintendent, treasurer, and secretary of my deep appreciation of the eminent services rendered by them in their steadfast endeavouri towards the colution of what grill' semains ane of the greatest problems of human life.
