There has never been any revision of this "index," and the Minister of the Interior has offered to examine the whola list and remove the ban from at least two-thirds of the number. With regard to the future, be proposed to abolish the censorship at to all books in foreign languages, including politics, social science and economics, while

THE WOMEN OF MOROCCO.
By far the larger poition of the inhabitants of Morocco have no Arab blood in their veins, but belong to the Berber race, which is of Indo- Germanic origin, and, although they have ac- cepted the Mohammedan religion, have never accepted the Turkish or Moorishattitude toward women. When one sees the women of the Berber classes the old idea of a weak, fading human flower, pining for light in a harem, dis appears. Bere is no type of this sort, but an unveiled, stately form, strong and conscious of herself. And these women represent the ma- more than 2,000,000, fority of the female Moors, numbering in all

The most noteworthy feature of the position of the Berber woman, Herr Guttzeit says, "i that there the old custom of the mother right" has been preserved. In accordance with this custom, a child is not named after the father, but after the mother. And in general the greater weight is given the smaterial line of des- ent. This is all the more romarkable as with the Moors and Arabs the principle of the pa- tiarchate prevails. If we consider how deeply men are influenced by inherited views in refer enge 10 marriage and the family we will easily see why the so-called insurrection in Morocco does not cease. The Berber tribes will never recognize the authority of a Sultan whose fami fy descended from a negro slave. With the

In ali important matters the women are con suited among the Berbers, and the women of the Tuareg tribe, in the southern part of Mo- rocco, are truly unique figures. In fact, they may be given a high place not only among the women af Islam, but among the women of the world. There is nothing share of Eastem po lygamy. The woman has the one husband and the husband the one wife.
