an unsuccessful candidáta for a vacant position, Sept.-Shanghai- 24th Sept., Gen-0. M.-San Francisco and 'Parte 16th AUBA Kumchuk, Samahui, Wuchow and Canton Boyd, Capt. and Mr. Maddaford, Mr. Gu

"No good Jack?" I asked.

"Not a bit," replied my friend. I expressed surprise, for the applicant held excellent testi monials, and looked a shrewd, intelligant, and likely man.

"Just my usual luck. have been refused employment on the same ground before--to0. tall is what explicit employers and managers say. They consider that I am intelligent and competent enough, in a'six-lost sort of way, but they seem to have a fixed Iden that tall men baven't the keenness of little med) give them An average size for business, and as much be low as you like. They're the men to move. Long men don't pay in commerce. It ipa facti Look about the city, and you'll see the truth of my words,"

I looked about the city and finding there was some truth in my friend's remarks, usado a Tew inquiries. As a result, I am inclined to think tall men are heavily handicapped in the battle of life, unless they have private mean or, as a last resource, join the police Even there inches are against them. Tall men, be Ing proverbially generous, soon get through their means. If they join the police they possiby gat twice as much work as a five-foot anything constable, because they are requisi. tloned for all Stale functions, and it's a thousand to one against the long one's ches: filling up the regulation coat of blue.

My investigations into this question soon. proved to me that excessive stature is a com mercial' objection' in more places than the city. In the medical profession it is, on the contrary, an undoubted advantage. Six foot of doctor inspires confidence in the worst cases, and a two yards length of barrister, poi- itician, or parson goes a long way is making a speech or a sermon telling, but it doesn't pay a lawyer to put himself in a forcing frame or eat Force food. Clients prefer the short, sharp, ferrety variety, ever popular in meindramn and fiction: Long lawyers only make one six-and. eightpance to len received by their shorter

brethren.

"

The short man gets on at almost any trade. The long man gets shelved in his stead in most occupations. I took the trouble to carefully inquire, and although there is no great preju-, dice against inches, yet there is a decided pre- ference. for, those with an average share, and as both sizes apply for almost any class of situation, the position is sufficiently serious

"We dont's like 'em over ligh," said a baker with whom I had a chat. They ain't as thick set as the short was, and when it comes to carrying a load of bread, or a sack of flour, why, they're not in it, but then, they're hand. Jer at the ovens, but inking everything inter consideration, there ain't no room for s'xfoolers in a Sydney bakery. That's tny opinion."

"Long men can't bend for any time," said a friendly bootmaker, "You won't find a tall man over the lasi, once in a blue mava." "Why?" "Well, I dunno, I suppose they're got too much back. If you don't believe me, keep your eyes open. No 'laint because the'ra ain't many. There's plenty of long 'uns about, but there ain't much market for them. They're no good for stooping jobs. Look at gardeners. They ain't gher than a rake 'andle, most of

thick, muscular fellows, and as a matter of fact this applies in the. Navy, although it does not exclude tall men.. How often do we see a long Jack Tar? Engineers, stonemasons, printers, carpenters, builders, and most kinds of factory hands all run shoirt and medium-sized. In fact,, the tall man is at a discount unless he engages in an occupation requiring an individual per #onality. The run-to-seed man looks well as a doctor, barrister, soldier, policeman, stopwalk: er, insurance agent, rate collector, or prize fighter, but in most things he is out of it.

Even in athletics length doesn't go for much. How many popular athletes are tall? How ma Dy of our eminent men measure three times a twa-foot ruls? How many great mea in the past have occupied their "full six feet of land ? Not the tall man is a failure, ils may de well, but he must keep his weather-eys on the man who fits under the top of his collar." W.J.C in Sydney Evening News,

A BISHOP ON DANCING, 'It'was recently charged against the Bishop of North Queensland that he was opposed to dancing. The right rev, prelate in a speech at Mackay has denied the impeachment. His at titude, be said, was rather that of the gallant Japanese naval officer in Adelaide, who, wiping his forebend after his first efforts, said that Australian dancing was good exercise, and he should recommend it as such to his sisters in Tokio. The bishop declared that he was pleas+ | ed to see the people dance, but he objected to the organisation of dances for church fands. To hile pleasure to masquerade as Christian Aims-giving was not an honour to the Church or Christian religion.
