A. F. Aldridge, in an article recently publish. ed in Pearson 3 Magazine, estimated that more than $43,000,000 is invested in yachts, $6,000,000- in clubhouses and club property, and that over $8,000,000 is spent every year for pleasure in yachting. These are now 390 clubs devoted to yachting in the United States. A careful ex amination of the records of yachts shows that there are siz steam yachts, 199 auxiliaries, 205 schooners, 1423 sloops and cutters, 226 yawls. 146 catboats and 308 launches with gas, diec tric or naphtha motors, making a total of 3118. yachts. No record is kept of sailing craft that are less than twenty-five feet long on the deck,. and there is no list of launches that are less. than twenty-five feet long. Of these, it was estimated by a prominent builder recently, there are more than 10,000 in the waters of this coun- ry. It is of the recorded boats only that esti- mates are given in this article. There are 512 steamen. Of these, 357 are built of wood, 35 are of composite construction-that is, matal and wood-and 139 are built entirely of THE Steamship steel.
