The Kobs Shimbun, which regards the result of the conference as being a humiliation to Tapan, points out that Japon has now been engaged in the war more than 570 days, and the expenditure on the war during that period amounts to 1,552 million yen. The amount
·wuted for last fiscal year was Y 576,000,000 and for the present year Y756,000,000, making a total of 1.332 millions. Adding the three hundred millions raised in Europe and America to meet any deficit for the present year, the total amounts to 1,637 millions. Out of this sum Y80,000,000, set aside for the reserve should be deducted, the balance, Y 14551,000,000, representing the actual sum sppropriated for war expenses from the outset. Not only has this enormous sum of money been sacrificed, fifty then and liver have been lost on the field of battle, and 150,000 men have been wounded and maimed. The war has cost Japan dearly, and what has been obtained from Austla as the result of the unbroken zuccession of victorian * is nothing more than a part of Saghulian. Not
sen of indemnity has been obtained. The limitation of Russin's naval strength and the surrender of the interned war-ships has not even bean secured. The resuls of a long war and the fruits of victory might be likened to the frois of the Sagbalien Tranty signed in 1862 between Takenouchi Shinozukenokami and Ignatieff A small piece of land in the
