Lam Pui was charged with the murder of Choi Kwong on the 18th August. He pleaded guilty and in explanation said he struck the man after having been struck himself. The decensed threw a stool at him and struck bim on the eye. Then he returned the assault with four or five blows,

Grave fears are being entertained in shipping circles regarding the safety of the American four-masted schooner Honolulu which left Shanghai in ballast for Port Townsend on the 25th March last, The Honolulu is a new vessel of 507 tons and was commanded by Captain Nielsog. The run over from Shanghai to the Sound is usually made in thirty to forty days.

A HANDSOME ADDITION TO THE H. A. L. CHINA FLEET,

The Hamburg-Amerika Linie are making a over, of the China coast freight and passenger bold bid to capture a fair share, and a little trade, and if they employ many ships in the service as good as the Admiral von Tirpite, the magnificent new vessel which has just been brought out to replace the Forwaeris on the Tsingtau-Chefoo-Tientsin line, they will shortly prove formidable competitors to all the older companies trading in China waters. The agents of the Company, Messrs Melchers & Co, held a reception on board the new vessel at Shanghai, on 14th inst., when about 400 visitors were most hospitably entertained by Captain lilack and his officers, who conducted the guests all over the ship, and pointed out with pardonable pride, the magnificent accom modation provided for passengers, and all the other features of the vessel's superb equipment. She is indeed,

and quite new, having been completed for sea only last July. She then came out to the Far East at a leisurely rate of steaming,, and proceeded to Tientsin, after which she came down to Shanghai.

Curiosity got the better of Lo On, and instead of going on he turned aside to see what the prisoner was to show him. He then robbed the complainant of his property and watch and other things, When the later became conscione, he found himself lying in a ravine, the prisoner gone. Later in the day the prisoner was arrested on another charge and on being searched a pawn ticket was found in his pocket which led to the discovery of Lo Ou's assailant..

Evidence was then led.

A verdict of guilty was returned by the jury.. His Lordship, after cummenting on the serious character of the offence, sentenced the prisoner to seven years' hard labour, and ordered that he receive 24 strokes of the birch tod within one week of his imprisonment.

The passenger accommodation is on a scale of magnificence never hitherto attempted on coasting steaners in China, says the China Gaselle. There are twelve first class cabins, including two spacious state-rooms, with minia ture saloons attached, on the upper deck, and ten large cabins, which are scarcely inferior to the first class in point of luxuriousness, for the accommodation of second-class European pas- sengers. The accommodation for the Chinese passengers, is all aft, and when the Chinese see the saloon which the Admiral von Tirpitsa provides for them they will, we fancy, feel a decided disinclination ever to travel by any other seamer. The ship which was built and engined by the Seebeck A. G. of Bremer haven-Geestemüude, is a vessel of 260 feet in length, by 40 feet in beam, by 14ft, gin. to the main-deck and 22 feet to the spar deck, her grogs tonnage being 2,400,-

THE RESCUE OF THE "PECHILI'S" PEOPLE.

THE VOLUNTEER CONCERT

.: STOPPED BY HAIN. The clerk of the weather would appear to. have a grievance against the Hongkong Volun», teer Corps. During last year quite a number. of promenads concerts were arranged to take place on their parade ground and several of them after being postponed on account of wat weather had finally to be abandoned because

of the lateness of the season, Once again the vagaries of the weather has been responsible for a disappointment, for on Saturday evening, when the second promenade concert of the seaipo, was announced to take place min inter- fered with the entertainment which came to an abrupt conclusion before the programme could be completed. From an artistic standpoint the concert proved another great success, and if one might judge from the size of the audi- ence there is not much doubt about the finan- Cial side of the entertainment being satisfactory to the promotors. It will be agreed that we owe a debt of gratitude to the inaugurators of these very entertaining, evenings, and trust that before the nights get too cool other oppor tunities will be afforded of attending more of these concerts. The ground was must pic- turesquely decorated with many Chinese lan- terns which shed their soft radiance on the brilliantly attired crowd, gay with bright uni- forms, while the volunteers were most courteous obtaining seats for the many visitors. But the elements proved most unkind before the end of the evening, the mpon ungenerously withdraw- ing her arc light behind a bank of clouds, and rain descending heavily. Early in the evening the soft still air aided the voices considerable, and there was every promise of one of the most successful entertainments of the season being finished. The first item of the programme was the overture of Tasuhauser, played by the band of the 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kents, who afterwards charmed us again with selec- tions from "The Three Little Maida" and during the interval gave The Choristers Waltz," which they have made so popular here. Their selections from The Rohemian Girl" also proved a musical teat, and one felt a great

admiration for the control that Bandmaster McKelvey has over his large circle of perfor. mers who are so much in sympathy with him. The duet, "Watchman ! what of the night?” by Messrs. W. S. Terrill and A. S. Paine, pleased the audience so much that at encore was demanded and responded to with that delight- fal partsong "The moon has raised her camp, the two voices blending admirably in both pieces. That duets are most effective in the open air was again proved in A. Reubenstein's “The Angel," sung by Mrs. George Grimble and Capt. G. P. Lammert, the voices being mellow ed io a fashion most pleasing to the car. Mr. W. M. Stewart sang Mande Valerie White's "Devdut. Lover," and responded to an encore with "The Mediceval Knight.” One wishes there were more opportunities of hearing this enjoy |able singer; his, enunciation and phrasing is the result is very gratifying to all lovers almost perfect and, with a fine bass voice, of music. Mr.. A, F., Walstow gave "This able fashion, and was loudly encored, and Way," by Lionci Monckton, in his inimat again proved his great varsatility. Capt. G. P and as an encorer gave that charming little Lammert sang "Because ". (Guy D'Harde lot), song of Creen's, "Sing me to sleep," in the Wieniawski's "Romance," by Mr. F. Juki, was pleasing style he has made quite his own. one of the gems of the evening, the beautiful tone of his violin, aided by his masterly control of it, combined to give a fine rendering of this difficult composition with its enhancing air produced with so much sympathy by Mr. Jokl. It was at this stage that rain commenced to fall heavily, our caused a hasty exodes from the ground. We were disappointed at pot hearing more of this artist's delightful playing and trust he will soon give the people of Hong- kong another opportunity of listening to his music. It was also a disappointment not to bear Mrs. A. G. Gurdon. However, we hope she will be prevailed upon to contribute to the next concert. Mr. G. Grimble bore out his reputation as an accompanist, and was in sympathy with all the singers, FITZGERALD'S elephant got loose in Shanghai the other day and went off at a trot, by way of Chungking Road in the direction of the
