ON A DESERT ISLAND.
PLIGHT OF A FRENCH CREW IN THE PACIFIC.
The wreck of the French vessel Anjou, which, as already reporter, was lost on the rocks of Cape Bristow, Auckland Island, fur Dishes a remarkabla parallel to the story of the Swiss Family Robinson. The survivors, who arrived at Marseilles, according to the London Chronicle, tell an interesting tide.

be said to one of his assistants. "Have sich company send an expert to explain their ma- chine. And get me out all the books in the library about this piece of mechanism." On Monday evening, thesistants called. Edison's attention to a stack of books several feet high, and reminded him of the apppintinent naxt day,, "Send the books up to the house. I'll look over them to-night, said Mr. Edison. The next morning he appeared at the exhibi- ion, and so thoroughly had he read the books that he frequently corrected the experts' expla nation of how their own machines worked.
The Anjou, with a crew of twenty-two, and A cargo of corn, left Sydney on January 20th for Falmouth, and was overtaken by a tem-wery two weeks. At present, he is experiment pest, which drove it on the rocks For an en- tire night the crew remained on the gradually sinking ship. At last morning came they found
that they were within a few hundred yards of land, but towering above them was a huge cliff. The crow embarked in three of the ship's boats, the captain taking what useful storas he could And. The ship's cat at the last moment jump- ed into one of the boats, and a few minutes lator the Anjou settled and sank. For hours
the wrecked men searched for an inlet, while their frail boats were flung hither and thither by the huge reas. Towards might they effected a landing on the island.
On exploring the island the ship-wrecked mariners found a shelter containing a mall store of fond-one of those erected by the New Zealand Government on the desolate coasts of these islands. The captain's diary showed that during their stay on the island they had to eat strange food. On February 8th he wrote: "Killed fifteen albatrosses, and keep. ing ten for tomorrow.
We are frozen with cold and weak with honger. We ate the albatrosses half-raw." Thursday, 9th -" Made a large fire and dried our clothes. Killed some more albatrosses. We caught some alive and tied tin-lids on which we scratched news of our plight, round the wings and set them free." Later they found an old pot, a relic of some former wreck, in which they were able to buil water and cook mussels.
An expedition across the island was made on Fabivary zoth, and a further store of food was found in another hut. Shoes were also die covered, which themen afterwards strengthened Tw wild goats. were with wooden sulce, killed next day. Spoons were made bar of
shells.
Day after day went by for three months. An improvised flag had fees hated on the cliff, and at last, on May 7th a ship was sighted was the 'finemoa, commanded by. Captain Go'lan, who for twenty years hat been revictualling, the Government depôts on these inhospitable costs. They were thus
saved and taken to Sydney.
THE MANILA SERVANT PROBLEM.
For American residents of Manila, the do mestic servant problem is both the comfort and the curse of existence. In the United States has been increasingly difficult to get any house bold help at all, and in the west, wages have rilen so high that only the very, well-to-do can afford the expense.
Here it is different. There are plenty of people ready to do anything that needs to be done about the house, and wages are reason. able. I at efficient service is rare, and honest servants are rarer, and between the snail's pace and the vanishing valuables, the housekeeper has tribulations enough.
There are good servants and bad ones here as there are everywhere. With good training, some of the cooks, nurses and muchachos be, come very capable, and within reasonable li mits, tustworthy. The greates, trouble is, that under ur sent condtions, there is no way whatever tri determine what surt of incompe tent or thieving native one is taking into his
house.
Recommendations may be all that could be asked, but the custom of borrowing these pa pers is universal, and there is no way to tell whether the bearer is the one for whom the paper was made.
occurs.
The only way to remedy this situation is to strange some form of registration of all house hold servants. In India, every man is enrolled and the facts of his family history, residence, casts, perenal recard and habits are all acces sible to any who may be interested, in case of nay defalcation the next of kin is held ac countable, and so complete is the system that it is unheard of that any serious thieving With the loose social organization of the Filipinos, it would be more difficult to carry ou such a plan, but it would be a simple matter to open a domestic servant deparment, either un. der Government supervis on, or as a private enterprise. With every servant now in Ameri can employ so recorded; thuse with unsavory records would find themselves out of work, and only the best could get positions. Housekeep ers could demand the records of applicants, and those not registered would find it difficult to get work without being first enrolled.
Once started, the whole system would tend to become self-enforcing and would at least cure many of the most trying defects of the present ulter lack of system. There is room for a good private employment bureau which could be made self-supporting, and if once the problema of bousehold service be simplified and con ditions improved, there would be great increase of contentment on the part of American women residing in Manila.-Cablenews.

THE MAN AND HIS METHODS. Much interesting information is given in an article on the "Modern Profession of Invent ing" In the "World's Work" about the greates of inventore, Edison-"To see him shuffling through his great liberatories, head bowed, bands in pockets, the flaccid flesh of his face falling in loose rolls beneath a skin unearthly white, his hair unkemptly combed, whichever way it pleases to fall, his ever focussed miles away, except when he flashes into someone else's a look of instant understanding, his | whole appearance, except for the eyes and the humorous, yet grim, mauth, is that, of a slove enly muscleless loafer.. Yet, this is the non who eating practically nothing, and-exercising not at all, works often for thirty-six hours with out sleep, falls unconscious from exhaustion on bench or desk, and wakes to work again, sometimes for a weak without undressing elec trical with mental snerpy, marvellous in the power of his inventive imagination." An in ventor according to Edison usually licks the bump of practicality. It is this bump in fact which he considers chiefly differentia tes him from the common or garden inven. tor. In the practice of his profession, Mr. Edison has to save time. There i A pretty well developed suspicion among bie assistants that fie deafness is large ly s ruse to avoid hearing things that he does not care to pay attention to. To Mr. Edison time is so valuable that he does not waste it Even by taking account of it. Tire to him is only "the chance to get things done, and na matter how long it takes they must be done. In his office safe, there is carefully locked away a6550 Swiss watch given him by a European scientific society. It is never used. Once it seems Edison wanted to study a part of the mechanism of typewriters. "Have a model here next Tuesday of every type-writer made,”
