IMPORTANT DISCOVERY IN
BGYPT
[Continued from page 3:]
This eastern end of the tomb contained a large number of small objects. There were imong them seven pairs of sandals, most of thom of papyrus, but one of them was of tamped yellow leather and another had been gilded. On the floor were numberless boxes, ach of them occupied by an "ushabii” Agure of considerable size. Many of the "ushablis " were of wood, but some were of alabaster, and
there were two of gold and two of silver. Here, too, was a second wand of office,
logether with vases and boxes of gaily painted wood. Among the boxes perhaps the most Interesting is a large "clothes chest of palmwood and papyrus; it is lined inside with papyrus, has two fastenings of string, and contains a second care or shelf with papyrus

Some of the objecte bore the names of Amon-hotep II, and bis Queen. This was the case, for instance, with a large vase of slabaster, as well as with a sort of box-stool, re-ragonia, for Portland, Or.. splendent with gold and blue enamel, on the
* cover of which the King is represented as sit. ling on the hieroglyphic of “gold.” On another box, which is fashioned like a small table with legs, the Pharaoh is depicted in the same at itade, yellow paint taking the place of gold on third box of smaller size. Among minor abjects, one of the most beautiful is a kohl-case
of blue faience with the cartouches of the King Near the latter the guilded handle of a mirror
was picked up, together with a stone box, paint. ed white and stuffed with cotton, the lid of which represented a recumbent musimy with
a winged soul on the breast. In another part of the tomb were two large wigs."
A1 its eastern extremity there was also a small armchair the back of which is formed by the figures of the god Bes and a monkey on either Alde of him. Two other armchairs were dis covered in the western portion of the tomb, The largest of these, with its seat of interlaced palm-fibre, is profusely ornamented with figures in black and gold. At the back is a double representation of "the eldest daughter of the King, Amon-sit"; in each representation she is seated on a throne, with a winge‹!. solar, dink above, and a female slave bringing her the offering of a golden collar, while under each aim of the chair are three other femala slaves holding up their offerings of rings of gold. An inscrimion tells us that the gold had been brought from "the lands of the south. The legs of the chair are modelled after those of an ox, and above' each of the front legs is a boss in the form of a human bead. There is a second atid rather sinaller armchair which also belonged to Amon-sit

It will take some time, however, before the work of thoroughly clearing the tomb out can be accomplished. Meanwhile it has revealed one striking fact-the ostentatious, not to say vulgar, display of wealth which dis tinguished Egyptian society in the later days of the 18th Dynasty. We had learned from the To'-el-^marns tables that Egypt was at the time the California of the civilized world-g land where, as the foreign correspondents of the Pharaoh reiterate, "gold is as plentiful sa dust," and in the profusion with which the pre-Portuguese. cious metal has been lavished on the contents of the newly-discovered tomb their words, re- calve a striking illustration. There was no
thing, however mean or insignificant, which was not literally plated with the gold of the desert mines. Fven the haraoh is represent od as seated upon the symbol of "gold.", and
1
the goddess is at the foot of Thua's cofin is pictured in the same position.
A pathetic relic of a dead world is a mat of palm fibra on which the figure of Osiris was delineated in soft mould. Seeds were then town in the mould, and in the green grass which sprung from them after the tomb had been closed and sealed the Egyptiano saw an Image and earnest of the resurrection. Aalmis lar "bed of Oniris" had already been found in the tomb of Amon-hotep 11.
Although some of the lodividual objects dis- covered by Mr. Davis may be matched in pre vious fiods, the discovery, as a whole, far sur. passes any that has yet been made in Egypt, and is in fact the most important ever made there, whether we regard the sit and richness of the colins and other sepulchral furniture, or the wealth of precious metal that has been them. The chariot alone, foy lavished пров completeness and beauty form, is unique, The discovery will not only increase pur knowledge of the history and customs of the 19th Dynasty of Egypt; it must also materially enlarge our conception of the anistic taste and skilful workmanship of the ancient "dwellers by the Nile
