KATHLEEN:
A STORY OF A SCAPEGOAT.
BY JOHN P. MACDONALD,
Children, I am ofton tol 4, have become very
proud, and very grand, and very worldly. Gose, those simple, admirable days when they lived chiefy in the numery ; when jam was a delight and when the shabby old rocking-horse was worshipped. In the year 1905, jam is a val garity and the venerable rocking-barse lies tragically on his back in the dusty attic; and Eibel and Edith, and Arthur and Edgar, adorn the park, the theatre, the drawing room, and positively confuse us with their languor and their finery,
ays Edith, in speaking of her mother's fast "At homa"-"Mr. William was in pink, and Lady Ashton in mauve,"
Says Ethel,When e lunched at the Carlton yesterday, Lady Ashton was in green"
As for Edith and Ethel themselves, they are respectively in cream and salmon. And mercy, the lace on the parasols of Edith and of Ethel, aged sloven

Of such a disposition, of such an elegance, are-so, at least, 1 um assured-the children of to-day, That delightful humorist, Mr. Barry Pain, has affirmed as much! His paper on these young worldlings made me wonder how I should behave if ever I found myself in their society.ow, to please them? How to win just one indulgent smile? I think and think, I lie awake all night, thinking. And I am embarrassed, I am shy, when the mament arrives for me to perform my first polite bowhining, for Singapore.

August 29.
FROM STRANGERS TO FRIENDS. However, an agreeable surprise. I am not received with fashionable haughtiness; Kalli- leen, indeed, is even more ill at ease than 1.eimun, for Swalow. My opening sentence-" What lovely weather? enlarig, for Singapore. I hope it will continue to be fine for Comestherin, for Singapore. and Goodwood!" leave unspoken. ThisVuhu, for Canton.

"PILSKANÆSTA TENTAN
brilliant overture was conceived after infinite Taming, for Manila. deliberation in the middle of the night, but now that I find myself face to face with Kath-rohsing, for Shanghai, lees I scarcely faucy she can be interested in Lydia, for Nagasaki. the doings of yachts and hories. She has Alabama, for Kobe, i large eyer, a wonderful complexion, a shock of golden bait-and she has yet to celebrate her fourth birthday. Her tea, the inken on the floor, at a footstool. Beside her, a battered He doll, and also a furry thing, designed after no earthly animal and so odd and ugly as to be indescribable. Thus not quick of the young worldling about Kathleen. And I dont believe she would be in the least annoyed if it rained at Cowes and Goodwood.
For a moment I think of joining her at her footstool-bus children, i remember, resent ane taking liberties with their own special property. It is her footstool - Only the, the battered doll and the uncanny furry thing may assemble round it. And so I remain respect fully in my chair, and smile amiably upon Kathleen; who, I un glad to notice, is begin. sing to be impressed by my geniality. We were strangers a few minutes ago. When handed her a sugared cake, we certainly be came acquaintances. And now that sho graciously invites me to walk with her in the garden, well-plainly we are friends.
"BUNKIN.'
With us, into the garden, go the battered doll and the furry thing--and the latter, learn, rejoices in the remarkable name of "Bunkia." It seems that "Bankinis na anruly and mischievous as he is ugly and uncanny. Quite earnestly, Kathleen assures me that he breaks windows, breaks vanes, breaks forniture. Also, he picks flowers that should not be picked, and sings loudly whes be should be asleep. Whenever anything goes wrong in the house, "Bunken" is at the bottom of it. No use begging Bunkin," 10 be good. Both Kathleen and the battered doll have tried to show him the evilness of his ways, but I absolutely refuses to turn over a new leaf. " spect he'll have to be killed," says Kathleen, solemnly. It is certainly s Bad case," I reply, sympathetically. And then Kathleen informe me that "Bankin" has just expressed a desire for a paney, and that he must therefore be hurned into his perambula tor. Together, we perform the tank: And never have I beheld a nora hideous spectacle than that of the battered doll and the furry, unruly, unearthly, "Bonkin" seated aide-by- side lo a ricketty perambulator.
"My dear," cries Kathleen suddenly, "i'at it lovely " And I am startled, and I feel that my companion is becoming familiar. Kath leen does not explain what is "lovely. In: deed, she continues, "My dear, I never heard of such a thing !" And then do I remember that Kathleen has a little way of picking up the expressions of her elders, and of uttering them without the slightest discrimination. For inst ance on the wall of the staircase that leads to Kathleen's bedroom, hangs a bit of string. As she ascends the staircase, he holds on to this piece of string. Only a little bit of stringBut Kathleen has given it a name. Most wonder fully, most weirdly, Kathleen has christened that bit of string-"A Good Job," An:!
My dear, repeats Kathleen, happily, "isn't it lovely!"
And when I agree-" My dear, I never heard of such a thing1"

ROUND THE GARDEN. Together, we stroll round the garden, while "Bunkin" and the battered doll remain in their perambulator in the middle of the lawn- a shocking spectacle. As we stroll, Kathleen becomes confidential. She tells me she takes salt baths to make her "big," and explains, "Cos I'm only a tiny baby now." he is anxious to know whether 1, 100, took salt baths is my infancy, and whelber I enjoyed them; and the informs me that, amongst other won-> ders, her wardrobe contains a pair of "real" brown shoes. Then, much about a certain Geoffrey, who is plainly an admirer of Kath- leen's. There appears to be this important com- pact between the two: to become "big" in "summer-line," They have arranged this together. The thing is sealed and settled. It only remains for "summer-time to come round. But Kathleen does not seem quite sure when this will ba, and I have not the heart to tell her that "summer-time" is al-Hue, Fr. s. 705, Godineau, 28th Aug, ready here.
Then, obligingly, she leads me to her own bit of garden, over which she reigns supreme. But no flowers in Kathleen's garden. Indeed, It le a veritable waste-for no sooner bas Kath. lean planted it with seeds than she is fired with the desire to dig them up. Enviously, she surveys adjacent briliant dɔwer-beds, and with some emotion she announces that she may not touch them. But"Bunkin" does. Yes, the diabolical "Bunkie," when no one is looking, works fearful havoc amongst the flower-beds. And Kathleen sighs, and Kathleen frowns but brightens up, always unintelligibly to ex claim, My dear, isn't it lovely," and, "My dear, I never heard of such a thing."
However, I must leave this rare Kathleen. Instead of accompanying me back to the house the prefers to remain in the garden ; and when I reach the door I turn to take a last look at her. And, lo and behold, the small form of Kathleen is bent over one of the forbidden dower-bede, And-barror of horrors she is. picking pansies rapidly with both hands. And Bunkin"; what of "Bunkin"? Although he is ugly, uncony, a hideous spectacle with one glass eye, & broken nose and half a tail--my heart goes out to poer, libelled and long-auffer- Ing" Bunkin. "Morning Leader.
