LYNCHING OF AN OFFICER,
[TRANLATED FROM THE "VIEDOMOSTI"] Intelligence has been received from Kursk giving the following details of the "lynching" of an officer. On the 30th June there arrived from Voronerb a goods train, to which were attached two carriages with troops and a 1st class carriage for the officer and his familyThetis, his wife and two children of tender age. The detachment was on its way to Kieft. The train arrived at noon, and was to proceed in the evening. At 5 p.nt, one of the soldiers be. gan to complain to the officer on the platform of the crash in the tronp-trucks (There were 40 man in each truck with the thermometer at 100 Fahrenheit) He then began to be im. perifnent 10 the officer and finally, on being ar- rested, broke into foul abuse. The officer drow his sword and with one blow cut off his head. The witnesses, of whom there were many, for the most part workman and "mon- jike," were stunned with horror, and then broke away in all directions.
The news of the event immediately passed along all the workshops, and in a short time an immense unmanageable eiuwd surrounded the train. Seeing their hostile intentions the officer hid himself in his carriage. The crowd besieged the carriage with shouts of "Kill the murderer!" and then pel ed it with a shower of stones and billets of wood. The officer's wife- appeared at the window with her children sobbing tembly. From the crowd rang out cries of "Come out, madame, do not be afraid!" and they almost dragged her out with the children and carried them into the waiting room. The engine driver jumped on to the engine and tried to start the train; but the path in the front of the train was already blocked, and meanwhile the infuriated crowd had as- sumed enormous dimensions and demanded the sumender of the officer. A mechanic's assistant rushed into the carriage, but from there resounded shots, and he fell wounded in both legs. The officer then began to shoot on the crowd and wounded two more of them. "Burn him! Burn him," cried out the crowd. Immediately the engine was detached, and the
carriage with the officer, who continued to shoot, was also detached and run by the ciowd into A siding. Barrels of kerosing were brought Lorches, soaked in kerosine, were liurled through the broken windows of the carriage; both outside and inside the carriage was in a blaze and in a few moments presented no more than a burning pile, into which the maddened crowd continued to hurt stones and toge of wood, When the carnage beyan lo burn down and the fire to die away the crowd rushed in and dragged out the smouldering body. Stones and blows were hailed on to the corpse. Mean while stretchers had been brought and a priest arrived at the body of the murdered soldier. The priest was asked to pronounce the rites of the dead, and, at the close, to the sound of

MYSTERY OF CANCER.
THE ABANDONMENT OF THE FARASITE THEORY
The statement by Sir William Church at the Annual meeting of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, that cancer was not associated with peculiarities of diet, climate, or inade of life, and that the true clue to the mystery of the disease was to be found in its marvellous power of cell multiplication, has awakened the greatest rublic interest. If research has not yet solved the mystery, it has at least pointed the way to success, and what is almost as important, it has got rd of a host of fallacier Tomatoes concerning this dread-ul scourge. were at one time supposed to be the caure. of cancer and at another a meat diet was suggested. Then excess of salt in food was definitely said to cause the disease; again, arsenic was thought to have some definite in fluence in its production; and, lastly, certain particular houses became known as "cancer" houses owing to the frequent occurrence of the disease in them. The report submitted to the meeting of the Research Fund contains the statement that "cancer is not caused by a parasite entering the body from without Concerning this point a well-known pathole- gist who has been engaged in cancer research At a Landon hospital, writes:

"This is certainly the most important state- ment made in the report, investigators thereby abandoning the parasitic theory of cancer, Until definitely proved this statement appears to have been made on insufficient grounds; and there are many who maintain (and not without reason) that cancer in an infections discale the fact that the virus is as yet unchanged in the cancer cells may be due to a virus entering the body from without, which our present-day: methods of research are Inadequate to discover. Ja small-pox and hydrophobia, which are undoubtedly infectious diseases, the virus is as yet unknown, though its existence is highly probable. The com mittee state that future work must be directed 40 ascertaining why cancer arises de novo in each Individual attacked by the disease. We must discover what causes the cells to proli forate. Is it an inherent property of the cells themselves or is it some exciting agent from without, such as a microbe? If cancer is Infectious, and there are some cases that sug- goat this, its infectivity must be of a very low order. Nevertheless, until we know how can cer arises it would be safer to regard it as infective. Irritation seems to play an import ant part in the cause of the disease, as it does in so many other diseases, by lowering the local resistence of the tissues. Cancer of the
lip often arises in those who smoke a clay pipe, cancer of the tongue in those who have a Jagged tooth, and many other similar instances might be cited. The question of the treatment still remains a surgical one, early, and free removal of the growth with the knife is the "Conly certain-mathod of combating the disease,"
