For instance, a punt down the Thames is not to be compared to a paridle is a dug-out canoe or a sail in the same by a square of calico hoist ad, There is a delightful Jake right away among the mountains, only five miles off, and no one ever enjoyed a lunch'like the one we had in the Ilitle read bungalow on the shore. Our first journey there was unique. The lunch 'was provided by the Government officials, and real-clusion we can strongly commend Mrs. Fisher's ly I never imagined men were so domesticated, They superintended the culinary arrangements. The Administrator made a meat plo, the crust of which might have been improved. Another produced a sort of triffe ; while a third manu factured, scones; and we tried not to notice the lick of baking powder. But we survived all thrac.
ABOUT THE PYOMIKS.
Mrs. Fieber never reached the vast forest about a hundred and twenty miles from north ta sanih, and nearly two hundred from east to west-which is the home of the "Batwa" (Pygmies), but she met several, who had been kidnapped, but had no desire to return to their old roving life. In height, she says, they range 'from four feet to four feei eight inches, and their bodies are perfectly proportioned. They are covered with an almost imperceptible downy hair, and their features she describes as "really ugly," though, for that matter, they are Do wore off than many other African tribes.
Of Pygmy life and bábito Mis, Fisher says:— They possess no permanent homes, but are constantly on the move, never spending more than three to five days at one ipot.
They burrow arnong the thick undergrowth, and make clearings round the trees in order to erect their tiny grass huts, which are built in less than an hour, with saplings stuck round in a circle, and tied at the top; grass and leaves
are then thrown round as a roofing. Very few adopt nay clothing. Ench man travels about with a bow and quiver of poisoned arrows in order that he may keep the family supplied in food. Although praceable among themselves, there is no civil cohesion among the pygmies. They recognise no King or chief; cach man is perfectly free to control his own h usehold. There are no class distinctions; but the best huntsman will have the largest following, be- cause with his spoils he is able to effect ex- changes with the near acighhours of the tribe

These title folk are never agriculturists, they live solely by hunting, and they are so agile that they can spring from branch to branch when following an animal. Agai, they will pursue an elephant for hours before their poi soned dart takes effect on the great beast. Never, surely, was there a more curious illustra tion of the triumph of mind over matter than is afforded by the spectacle of the tiny Pygmies standing on the carcare of the fallen monster. and cutting it up for food. I curious that

"DLASIYO."
Missionary energy had boldly tackled this diminutive (and to all appearance somewhat stony) vineyard, with the result that at Mbaga Mrs, Fisher found seven Pygmies under Chris tian instruction, one of whom had been baptis. ed, and threa more, in Kabaiole, learning to read. Blasiyo was the first of his tribe to be. baptised. There is a photograph of Blasiyo, clad in a long white shirt, and holding the Calon Jack in one hand and the Stars and Stripes in the other somewhat pathetic picture. Blasiyo, we read, is a cheerful linle person, and, though work "is a great trouble to him" (ye gods we should think so!), he is "always ready for tricks and games." Footbal

SOME OTHER TRIBER
Mrs. Fisher met other queer folk besides the Pygmies, as for example, the Bahuku, who live near the Congo. Among these people human flesh is regarded as a luxury, besides corpsc dating, and the upper classes buy from the peasants their dead at a price of from two to six goats. A dinner in smart Bahuku society must be a gruesome banquet ; one hopes they do not, like the typical savage triba of Sydney Smith, "always keep cold missionary on the sideboard but it is surprising to team that "they expressed no wish for a teacher to basent to them." They might have dined off him Then, there are the Babira and Balaga folk whose women have a practice which Mrs. Fisher believes to be unique (we sincerely hope it is) anong Central African tribes, which is this
