PANAMA CANAL.

ITS ADVANTAGES,

Mr. l'enfield, formerly the United States Consul:General at Cairo, has contributed to the "North American Review "an article on the, Panama Canal. The article makes in- eresting reading owing to the writer being thoroughly acquainted with matter Appartaiti ing to the proposed waterway and to the Suet

Canal.

Mr. Penfield recognises that European ship. mastors will always favour Suez for cargo when the two routes present advantages practically equal, and will not be disposed to help a strictly American' concern to pay its way,

and more to secure the bulk of the mercantile marino of the Western Hemisphere. He even

these runs, is the newest, fastast and most sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The specially as the United States proceeds more

The Isthmian short cut to Oceania and Asia, comprising the coastal section of China's vast empire (not to be permitted by Powers to remain dormant), enterprising Japan, the East Indies, Australia, New Zealand, and our own Philippine archipelago, is the world's most potentential area. The "Will it pay?" proposition is the next question with which Mr. Penfeld deals. The Panama Canal rates most be so adjuste: as' to compete, not with present ones-and, we would add, with still lower nnes, considerably lower if the competition becomes keen, which we hope it will. for that will mean a great volume of overseas trade The total capital cont is worked out at 225 million dollars, and the year. ly expenses at 13 million dollars. Taking the nean between optimistic and pessimistic, esti. mates of traffic our friend computes that six years after the canal is opened the tonuage will be 7,500,000; but on the basis of the Suez Ca |nal charges this would bring in only 13,750,000 Ferry Company's Pier, Ice House Street dollars a year.
