The litle ridemian considers himself as much stranger to Hindustan as a white man does, and he is the only native who receives the title of "abib." The British troops never refer to

Gurkha as a Sepoy, but always as a rifleman,

a name the little meo, above all others, are prond to hear. As ordinary infantry the Gurk: challenge comparison with any in the world not excepting the Japanese, whom,in their con- tingal cheerfulness and smallness of stature they resemble, The Gurkha is, however, of a sturdier build than the average Japanese.

They are not regarded as quick marchers, as their short but muscular legs do not allow them 16 cover ground as quickly as long-limbed Brit- Jeb, German or Russian troops. But Gurkhas

swing along at three miles an hour till ithers, and in times of great urgency are capable of a dog-trot that absolutely swallows op the miles. But it is as bill soldiers that they most conspicuously shine. Among the mountains, in the subtle conflict on crag and crevice, they have no rivals.
