THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH MONDAY, AUGUST 21, 1905
THE TYPHOON IN JAPAN.
DEATH OF CAPTAIN W. D. BARKER,
Shanghai luckily escaped the severs storm which, otriving on the Japan coast, raged from Kiushu along the Ibland Sea, and as far as Yokohama and Tokio, on Tuesday fast week, says the N. C. D. News of 14th inst. Steam ers arriving from the latter porte experienced very heavy seas, the N.D. L. S. Prins Heinrich was delayed forty-eight hours at Kobe, while at Nagasaki the gala was the most furious ex perienced for years. While it lasted the har. bour, sheltered as it is, ran with huge waves which broke in spray all along the Bund, tossed the many steam launches at anchor like so many corks, tore two large lotchas from their moorings, and sent them drifting down the harbour, and converted several of the large open lighters fits into battering rams, ham. mering at the Customs hatoba and then into splinters. The massive stone work of the hatoba was beaton down on one side. To the Japanese city seven houses were completely destroyed and thres badly damaged, trees and palings were blown down in all parts of the city, ricshas with passengers were overturned, re- sidents on the hill found it dangerous and in some instances, impossible to reach their homes, and outdoor business was at a com- plate standstill. The storm lastled exactly ons slay and the barometer then rose as rapidly as i had previously fallen. The German sir. Speria (2,659 tons net) entered the harbour on Wednesday with her foreniast banging broken over her starboard side, and with a consider able list.
The worst disaster resulted in the death of Captain Walter B. Barker, U.S. Quartermaster General at Nagasaki, one of the most popular men in the foreign community, and known and liked by many Americans and others on the China coast as well as in Japan: Capain Barker was a passenger by the 1.21 p.m. train from Nagasaki for Yat sushiro. He was proceeding to Taken for the night, intending to return to Isahaya next day, meet his horse and servant there and ride over to Unzen, About a mile west of Takeo the railway passes along an embankment very much exposed, and skirting the sea coast en one side. Probably the metals had been wash. ed away, and the break was not observed by the driver till too late; however, the accident was caused, the train ran down the embank-
ment and was piled up in a paddy field. The first-class carriage, in which Capt. Barker was the only passenger, was next to the engine and suffered most severely of all.
It is believed that the unfortunate Captain was looking out of the window at the time of the accident; he was taken up shockingly injured, with contased wounds and bones broken in all parts of the body, but quite conscious, Medic al attentions were given at Takeo and informa- tion telegraphed to the American Consul, Mr. Harris, at Napasaki, but before the restoration of the line made it possible for friends to reach him, Captain Barker had died. Mr. Watts, bis assistant, proceeded to Taked and brought
back the remains, which were cremated on Thursday and will be sent home to the States.
Captain Barker had held bis appointment about three years. He was not quite sixty- years old, and forty years ago fought as a Con- fedemte soldier against the authorities whom he subsequently served, in Cuba as Consul at Malanzas, and in the Philippines attached to the Army. He was an unmarried man, and his home was at Minneapolis,
In the derailing of the train a number of Japanese, variously reported at from twenty to forty, were injured or killed. The line was in terrupted in several other places, and the telegraph wires were also broken, but quickly restored.
At Obama and Lnzen, both of which resorts are full of visitors, many of them from Shang hai, the gale was terrific, and a good deal of misor damage was done. Windows were blown in and shutters torn away, a mat shedding erected at the little Unten store vanished com. pletely, the sea at Obama ran mountains high, Visitors at the hotels, however, escaped with nothing worse than a good deal of excitement and some shaking.

steamer Perlak (1,037 ton. net), which had just arrived at Woosung an her first voyage up from Sumatra, caught fire at her anchorage off Bush Island about 11.30 on Saturday morning (12th inst. The flames completely got the better of the officers and crew, who seemed to despair of preventing her from becoming Total wreck. though the pilot, Mr. Armisted, worked hard to save ship and cargo, Captain Carison, the Harbour Master, was early on board, and work

In a few seconds nothing remained of the poor follow. Another Chinese who wear to the forepeak to pay but chain was never sogn again. One of the foreign engineers of the ship was severely burnt and was removed to hospital at Shanghai.
To add to the difficulties of the situation the flames were practically under when the Parlak began to drag. She travelled safely between two steamers, and a sug which was standing
by was eventually able to secure her and tow her closer in. Before midnight the Are was extinguished, and, thanks entirely to the efforts of the Fire Brigade, the vessel herself and the oil in bulk are saved.
According to the fatest news, the vessel was pumped out and ready to come up to Shang hai.
During Saturday night the Fire Brigade was caled out to another blare in French Low, off the Rue du Consulat Extension, The out- break was in a Chinese house, standing by itself, and it was quickly got under. The way that these pills restore poor ailing girls to bloom and beauty has be come famous in every street. Read a typical case-Miss Florence Benbow, 3, back of 192, Heneage-street, Ashted, Birmingham, England. Shepells her own story so intelligently that we can do nothing to improve upon it.
